For the first time, Spanish midfielder Rodri, pillar of Manchester City and the Spanish national team, wins the prestigious Ballon d’Or

On Monday October 28, 2024, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, during the 68th Ballon d’Or ceremony, the Spaniard Rodri was crowned for his outstanding performances during the 2023-2024 season. This distinction is based for the third time on the results of the season, extending from August 1, 2023 to July 31, 2024, marking an evolution in the criteria for awarding this prestigious award. Rodri, a true leader under the orders of Pep Guardiola, has established himself as a talent respected by everyone, even by his opponents.

His impressive record this season testifies to his impact: champion of the Premier League, winner of the Club World Cup and voted best player of Euro 2024. Rodri has distinguished himself with remarkable regularity and consistency, playing nearly fifty matches at the highest level. This Ballon d’Or crowns an exceptional career for this midfielder, who has, over the seasons, risen to the top of European football.

This year also marks a first in 21 years, with the absence of iconic candidates Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo among the nominees. Other awards were presented during the ceremony, such as the Best Coach award for the men’s and women’s teams, given to Carlo Ancelotti and Emma Hayes respectively. The Gerd Müller Trophy, awarded to Harry Kane, rewarded the season’s top scorer, while the Socrates Prize was awarded to Jennifer Hermoso for her social commitment. The Yachine trophy for best goalkeeper was also awarded, as well as the Kopa trophy, won by Lamine Yamal, celebrating young talents. Finally, the women’s Ballon d’Or was awarded to the Spaniard Aitana Bonmatí.

This Ballon d’Or gala, long awaited every year, allowed us to celebrate the new faces of world football, among whom Rodri now shines brightly.
