It is the second cause of death in Italy after ischemic heart diseases, as well as representing the first cause of disability. Stroke, the World Day of which is celebrated today, affects over 130 thousand people in our country every year and it is estimated that over 1 million patients have disabilities resulting from the stroke. An age-related pathology, although cases among young people are not rare, also due to the excessive and growing consumption of drugs. The number of cases increases with ageing, particularly involving those over 65. In some cases the stroke is preceded by warning signs, the so-called transient ischemic attacks or TIA, i.e. episodes of ischemia limited in time, characterized by paresis, disturbances speech or other short-term disturbances followed by complete recovery. Unfortunately, however, in most cases a stroke is a sudden and unpredictable event.
In recent years, stroke treatment, together with early rescue, has improved the chances of immediate treatment and reduced the risk of permanent disability. For this reason it is necessary to pay close attention to some signs, such as sudden paresis of a leg or arm with loss of strength, decreased vision, sudden difficulty in speaking. In this case, time is of the essence and it is important to reach an emergency room as soon as possible to start thrombolytic therapies. In Italy, the Stroke Networks are active in all regions and involve the neurologists of the various hospitals, where there are teams dedicated to managing the acute and subacute phases of strokes.
“On the occasion of World Stroke Day, Sin reiterates the importance of neurology, as well as the need to have a ‘National Stroke Plan’ in our country too which allows for timely diagnoses and treatments, even remotely through telemedicine, throughout the national territory and which avoids inappropriate hospitalizations or ineffective treatments”, declares the president of the Italian Neurology Society, Alessandro Padovani.
“As evidence of the importance of risk factors and the concrete possibility of prevention in line with the national One Health Plan – underlines Padovani – in recent years there has been a reduction in the incidence or number of cases per year. the symptoms manifest themselves acutely, it is essential to reach an emergency room as soon as possible to start thrombolytic therapies. In Italy, the Stroke Networks are active in all regions which involve the neurologists of the various hospitals where there are teams dedicated to treatment. burden of the acute and subacute phases of strokes”.
Sin, together with the Italian Stroke Association, this year wanted to include World Stroke Day among the initiatives aimed at promoting its commitment within the One Brain, One Health campaign in favor of brain health. “Our commitment – concludes Padovani – is to always support information and knowledge initiatives on brain stroke, in the hope that our country will soon be at the forefront in the fight against all brain diseases”.
