Dhaka: The political instability of Bangladesh has increased India’s tension. The ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has taken refuge in India. At the same time, anti-India political and religious parties are openly playing tricks in Bangladesh. At present three signals are coming from the politics of Bangladesh. First, the responsibility of holding fresh parliamentary elections rests with the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. But, he is attacking Sheikh Hasina’s political organizations hard.
Second, the Hasina camp is indicating that a political revival plan is in the works and its Awami League is entering the fray to regain its footing after Sheikh Hasina’s sudden fall from the seat of power. Third, Hasina’s arch rival and former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia is confident that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina can make a comeback.
attack on the roots of beauty
After filing thousands of cases against Sheikh Hasina supporters and party workers and arresting hundreds of them, the Yunus government has not only filed cases against the Awami League and its patrons but also for defaming the legacy of the liberation war. A new step has been taken.
Barrage of cases against Sheikh Hasina
Set up by Hasina in 2009 to try war crimes during Bangladesh’s 1971 liberation war, the International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) this week indicted a total of 20 individuals, including her close associates – former army chief Ziaul Ahsan, 10 former ministers, a retired Summons issued. These also include a Supreme Court judge and two advisors to the ousted Prime Minister. According to Bangladeshi media reports, he has been asked to face court on 18 and 20 November.
Serious cases registered against Hasina’s associates also
The men summoned are accused of being involved in crimes against humanity, including genocide, during the July-August uprising that led Hasina to oust from power and flee the country. At least 753 people were killed during this rebellion. Due to this, Hasina government had to face serious retaliation. The Yunus-government backed ICT prosecution team is processing over 60 complaints filed against Hasina and her party leaders. Mohammad Yunus is considered a staunch opponent of Sheikh Hasina. He had also formed a political party against Hasina.
Awami League’s student wing also banned
The Yunus-led interim government also recently banned the student wing of the Awami League. This student wing was once considered the flag bearer of its political power throughout Bangladesh. The party still believes that the Bangladesh insurgency was limited to the national capital Dhaka and that support for their party still exists in the hinterland of the country. For this, Awami League also gave the example of its massive victory in the general elections held in January 2024. However, that election was boycotted by the opposition parties.
