Bundesrat called on Putin to end the war against Ukraine | News from Germany about Germany | DW

The Bundesrat – the representation of the federal lands of Germany – unanimously condemned Russia’s war in Ukraine and called on Moscow to immediately withdraw its troops. At a meeting on Friday, March 11, a number of heads of land governments spoke about the difficulties with the placement of Ukrainian refugees.

“The killings must stop,” said Bundesrat chairman, Thuringian Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow. He appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin: “Withdraw your army, stop the war!” Expressing solidarity with Ukraine, members of the Bundesrat at the beginning of the hearings rose from their seats.

The issue of accommodation of refugees from Ukraine

The Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, Malu Dreyer, commented approvingly that the issue of accommodating refugees is being resolved in agreement with the German government. It’s important “that we get better at this,” Dryer added. The question of supplying the refugees is to be discussed at the conference of heads of state governments next week.

Since the beginning of the war, the German federal police have registered 109,183 refugees who entered Germany in connection with the events in Ukraine. The majority – 99,091 people – are Ukrainian citizens. Since Ukrainians are allowed to enter the EU without a visa, and there is no stationary control, in reality this number is likely to be higher, dpa reports. It is not known exactly how many refugees are sent to other European Union countries.

Support for a democratic Ukraine

At an informal summit in Versailles, EU countries have previously stated that they will continue to provide Ukrainian refugees with “humanitarian, medical and financial” assistance.

The EU states also promised to “support the restoration of a democratic Ukraine” after the end of the war. The document noted that the European Commission should give an opinion on the Ukrainian application for entry into the European Union, and until then it is planned to strengthen partnerships with Kiev. “Ukraine belongs to our European family,” the statement stressed.
