Bikini Atoll was the site of a controversial experiment by the US government in 1946. The atomic bomb tests of “Operation Crossroads” dealt among other things with the effect of the detonations on ships. One of them was the Prinz Eugen, the only large German battleship that survived World War II unscathed. More than 70 years later, a team of scientists is studying the shipwrecks on the bottom of the Pacific. What insights do they provide the researchers?
