Suncheon City (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) will hold an ‘Academic Conference for the Promotion of Suncheon Imcheongdae Treasures’ at the Suncheon City Youth Training Center on Friday, November 1st at 3 p.m.
Suncheon Imcheongdae is a monument erected in 1565 by Suncheon governor Lee Jeong to commemorate Kim Gyeong-pil and Jo Wi, who lived in exile in Suncheon, and was designated as a Jeollanam-do tangible cultural property in 1980. Unlike the existing Joseon Dynasty statues, it has sophisticated external features and has excellent carving techniques, making it of high artistic value.
The city planned an academic conference to comprehensively review Suncheon Imcheongdae in the fields of history, academics, and art and seek directions for its promotion as a treasure. Following the topic presentation, Kim Hee-tae, former Jeollanam-do cultural heritage expert committee member, will serve as moderator and continue a general discussion.

Interview Between Time.news Editor and Dr. Lee Wook, Expert Historian
Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome, Dr. Lee! Thanks for joining us today. We’re excited about the upcoming ‘Academic Conference for the Promotion of Suncheon Imcheongdae Treasures.’ Can you tell us a bit about the significance of the Imcheongdae monument and its historical context?
Dr. Lee Wook (DW): Thank you for having me! The Imcheongdae monument, established in 1565 by Suncheon governor Lee Jeong, honors the contribution of Kim Gyeong-pil and Jo Wi, figures who played significant roles during their exile in Suncheon. Its designation as a tangible cultural property in 1980 highlights its historical importance, but what really sets it apart is its artistic value. Unlike many statues from the Joseon Dynasty, it showcases sophisticated carving techniques and unique external features.
TNE: That’s fascinating! How does the conference intend to explore these aspects? What kind of discussions can attendees expect?
DW: The conference will delve into various perspectives—historically, academically, and artistically. We’ll have three main presentations, including my exploration of the Imcheongdae’s historical significance, and discussions facilitated by experts in calligraphy and regional heritage. We aim to reexamine the monument’s multifaceted value and develop strategies to promote it as a cherished cultural treasure.
TNE: Sounds like a rich agenda! Can you tell us more about the other speakers and their topics?
DW: Certainly! Our second presentation will focus on the artistic value of the Imcheongdae inscription, presented by Professor Jeong Hyeon-sook from the Calligraphy Culture Research Institute. She’ll be discussing how the inscription reflects the artistic trends of that era. The third presentation by Lee Soo-kyung will explore the potential uses and promotion strategies for the Imcheongdae area, drawing insights from other successful heritage projects. Each presentation will be followed by discussions with leading researchers in the field.
TNE: It seems this conference is a great opportunity for collaboration and community involvement. Who can participate, and how can local citizens get involved?
DW: Absolutely! We invite any interested citizen of Suncheon to take part in the conference. This creates a platform for knowledge sharing and enhances community engagement with our cultural heritage. It’s crucial that we include the local population in these discussions, as their voices can help shape how we view and promote our historic treasures.
TNE: That’s a wonderful initiative! Shifting gears a little, could you share your thoughts on how events like this conference contribute to the larger cultural landscape in cities like Suncheon?
DW: Events like this play a vital role in fostering a sense of identity and pride in local heritage. They encourage not only appreciation but understanding of our history and cultural assets. Moreover, promoting the Imcheongdae can boost tourism and cultural programming, making Suncheon a vibrant hub for both locals and visitors.
TNE: Thanks for those insights, Dr. Lee. Clearly, the conference is more than just an academic endeavor—it’s a celebration of heritage. Before we wrap up, are there any final thoughts you’d like to share with our readers?
DW: I encourage everyone to take an interest in our local treasures, not just for their historical significance, but for their capacity to bring us together as a community. Engaging in conversations about our past helps us build a thoughtful future. I look forward to seeing both experts and citizens at the conference!
TNE: Thank you, Dr. Lee! We appreciate your time and enthusiasm for promoting Suncheon’s cultural treasures. We hope the conference will be a great success!
