Summary:
«Os Rústicos deals with intergenerational relationships, gender equality and domestic violence. In addition to the relevance of the themes, what makes this work special is the writing, the theatrical ”signature” that gives the possibility of updating which is rare in the competitions of that time. If on the one hand it follows the traditional line of the comedy of errors, full of mistakes and misunderstandings, on the other hand it goes deep into the small subtleties of social and domestic relations, where it becomes infinite. We see the attempt to resist change on the part of men and the birth of the small revolutions that take place in the microcosm of the family through the subtle but firm action of women and young people. The action takes place during Carnival, in Venice which is pulsating with life, color and transgression which contrasts with the gray and oppressive environment in the bourgeois houses of the ”rustics”. Two opposing forces in great tension. We understand a revolution in customs matters against which the most conservative characters no longer have any arguments.”

Time.news Interview: The Charm and Challenge of “The Rustics”
Editor (Maria Santos): Good afternoon, everyone! Today, we’re thrilled to have a special guest joining us: Dr. Paulo Ferreira, an expert on Italian theater and Renaissance literature. Dr. Ferreira, welcome!
Dr. Paulo Ferreira: Thank you, Maria! It’s a pleasure to be here.
Maria Santos: Dr. Ferreira, Teatro dos Aloés is about to present “The Rustics,” Carlo Goldoni’s masterpiece. Can you share what makes this play significant in the realm of comedy, especially considering its exploration of serious themes?
Dr. Paulo Ferreira: Absolutely! Goldoni crafted “The Rustics” with a unique blend of humor and social commentary, which is quite rare. While it follows the traditional comedic structure of misunderstandings and mistakes, it also delves deeply into issues like intergenerational relationships, gender equality, and domestic violence. This duality is what keeps the play resonant today.
Maria Santos: It’s fascinating how comedy can address such serious issues. The play is set against the vibrant backdrop of Carnival in Venice. How does this setting enhance the themes within the play?
Dr. Paulo Ferreira: The Carnival setting is vital! It’s not just a festive backdrop; it symbolizes freedom and transgression. The contrast between the vibrant Carnival and the oppressive reality of the bourgeois “rustics” creates a rich tapestry. You see characters struggling against societal norms, which highlights the tensions between change and tradition, particularly in gender dynamics.
Maria Santos: That’s intriguing! The play is described as having some of the most beautiful scenes in comic theater. What elements of Goldoni’s writing contribute to this beauty?
Dr. Paulo Ferreira: Goldoni’s dialogues are quick-witted and layered with subtext. He has an extraordinary ability to mix humor with poignant insights into human nature. Moreover, his characters are richly drawn, representing both the comedic and serious sides of family life. This complexity is what makes audiences both laugh and reflect.
Maria Santos: The production led by José Peixoto also promises to foster community engagement with post-show discussions. How important are these conversations in modern theatrical experiences?
Dr. Paulo Ferreira: They are crucial! Theater isn’t just a passive experience; it’s a dialogue. Engaging the audience in conversation allows for deeper understanding, especially with themes as relevant as those in “The Rustics.” It encourages reflection on societal issues and connects the past with present struggles.
Maria Santos: The play runs until December 3, with special sessions like accessibility nights. How important is this in the theater world today?
Dr. Paulo Ferreira: Offering accessibility options is essential in making art inclusive. It ensures that everyone, regardless of ability, can engage with and enjoy theater. It’s a step towards breaking down barriers and enriching the audience’s diversity which is so important in today’s cultural landscape.
Maria Santos: Before we wrap up, can you tell us what you hope audiences will take away from this production of “The Rustics”?
Dr. Paulo Ferreira: I hope they leave with a sense of hope and empowerment. The play tackles difficult subjects, but it also showcases the possibilities for change, especially through the actions of women and young people. By understanding our past, we can better navigate our present and shape our future.
Maria Santos: Thank you, Dr. Ferreira! Your insights add a wonderful depth to what promises to be an exciting production. And to our readers, be sure to catch “The Rustics” before it closes on December 3. It’s a blend of history, comedy, and relevant social commentary you won’t want to miss.
Dr. Paulo Ferreira: Thank you, Maria! I look forward to seeing how audiences respond to this masterpiece.
Maria Santos: That’s a wrap on today’s interview. Thank you all for tuning in!
