Mattersburg cultural center opens in May after renovation

After several years of renovation work, the Mattersburg Cultural Center (KUZ) opened on May 22 – the anniversary of the opening of the original cultural center in 1976. A cultural center is now being built on 4,750 square meters that will bring together science, education and culture with a focus on literature in one place, says Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) during his visit to the KUZ.

The new cultural center includes the Burgenland cultural institutions, the state archive, the state library, the literature house and the adult education center. There is also a multifunctional foyer and a restaurant. At the beginning and during the settlement work, 24 people will work in the KUZ, in normal operation there will be 15 employees. The total costs for the project amount to around EUR 21 million gross.

A total of 7,400 running meters of archive and library material will be moved from the state archive in Eisenstadt. Furthermore, around 4,100 running meters of boxes with files and certificates, 45 plan cabinets for particularly valuable exhibits such as historical maps and 500,000 objects from the photo collection. Five microfilm cabinets with around 2,300 microfilms and microfiches as well as 3,300 running meters of books, newspapers and posters are also being stored in a new location. Around 3,600 running meters of archive and filing material remain at the Eisenstadt site.
