Interview between Time.news Editor and Billy Zane on His Upcoming Role as Marlon Brando
Time.news Editor (TNE): Good afternoon, Billy! Thanks for joining us today. You have quite an exciting transformation coming up with your role as Marlon Brando in “Waltz By Brando.” How does it feel to take on such an iconic figure in film history?
Billy Zane (BZ): Good afternoon! It’s an incredible honor, really. Marlon Brando is one of those actors who changed the landscape of cinema, and stepping into his shoes is both thrilling and daunting. I want to do justice to his legacy while adding my own interpretation as well.
TNE: The Turin Film Festival will be showcasing your portrayal shortly. What can you share about the creative process behind getting into the character of Brando?
BZ: For me, it’s all about immersing myself in his work and life. I watched a lot of his films, studied his mannerisms, and read about his personal experiences. Brando was so much more than an actor; he was a cultural icon with a complex personality. It’s been a deep dive into understanding him beyond his on-screen performances.
TNE: The first images of you as Brando have already drawn significant attention! Was there a specific moment or scene from Brando’s career that inspired you while preparing for this role?
BZ: Absolutely! One moment that greatly inspired me was his groundbreaking performance in “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The raw emotion and complexity he brought to that character are something I aim to capture. It was revolutionary at the time and set a benchmark for method acting. I hope to channel that intensity in my performance.
TNE: You’ve had a remarkable career, often remembered for your role as Cal Hockley in “Titanic.” How does it feel to transition from a character like Cal to someone as revered as Marlon Brando?
BZ: Each role is a new adventure. Cal was a complex character with his own motivations, but Brando represents a whole different level of artistry and nuance. It’s like entering a new world within the same industry. I love embracing the challenges that come with these transitions.
TNE: The audience is eager to see how you portray Brando’s charisma and complexity. Do you have any methods or techniques that you personally choose to embrace during your roles?
BZ: I think it’s important to never lose sight of the humanity in a character. I like to explore their vulnerabilities, fears, and struggles. I also find it helpful to engage with people who knew the real Brando, to gain insights and perspectives that can inform and enrich my portrayal.
TNE: Fascinating! Looking ahead, how do you hope this transformation will influence your career trajectory?
BZ: I aspire to challenge myself more with each role I take. Portraying Brando is about more than just career progression; it’s a chance to honor a legendary figure and inspire future generations of actors. I hope this role opens new doors and allows me to explore a broader range of complexities in characters.
