Nintendo’s new RPG game Mario & Luigi: Brothership arrives next week on the Switch, with an update regarding the eShop version’s file size.
According to multiple eShop pages, this new entry in the Mario & Luigi series will require approximately 9.8GB of storage. This estimation positions it close to the 10GB mark. The last entry in the series, Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey, was released for the 3DS in 2018/19.
This likely makes Mario & Luigi: Brothership the largest title in the series to date, at least in terms of file size. For those opting to purchase a digital copy, Nintendo is also offering the game as part of its Game Voucher service, which allows players to redeem two first-party titles.

Interview Between Time.news Editor and Gaming Expert James Turner
Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome, everyone, to today’s special feature on the highly anticipated RPG title, Mario & Luigi: Brothership! We’re excited to discuss this latest addition to the beloved series with gaming expert, James Turner. Thanks for joining us, James!
James Turner (JT): Thank you for having me! It’s an exciting time for Mario & Luigi fans.
TNE: Absolutely! Now, the game is set to arrive next week on the Switch, and we’ve learned that it will require approximately 9.8GB of storage. This positions it as the largest title in the series to date. What does this say about the evolution of the Mario & Luigi franchise?
JT: It reflects a couple of things. Firstly, the increasing complexity and depth of the games. With larger file sizes, developers can incorporate more content—be it graphics, audio, or gameplay mechanics. The last entry, as you mentioned, was for the 3DS and was a bit more limited in scope. With the Switch, there’s an opportunity to really push boundaries.
TNE: How do you think fans will react to this new size? Do you think they’ll be okay with it, or will it cause any concerns?
JT: Generally, fans are pretty understanding when it comes to file sizes—especially given the vast improvements in gameplay and graphics. However, there might be some players who have limited storage on their consoles, so it’s a good idea for Nintendo to provide options like the Game Voucher service to ease the purchase decision.
TNE: Speaking of the Game Vouchers, it seems that Nintendo is really doubling down on offering flexibility with their purchases. How significant is this move for the company’s digital strategy?
JT: The Game Voucher service is a fantastic initiative! It not only encourages digital purchases but also reinforces player loyalty. By allowing players to pick two first-party titles, Nintendo creates a value proposition that is hard to pass up. It’s a smart way to navigate the competition in the digital marketplace.
TNE: You’ve been following the series for years; how popular do you think Brothership will be compared to past titles?
JT: Given the strong nostalgia factor tied to Mario & Luigi and the advancements in gameplay, I think it will perform exceptionally well. The franchise has a loyal fan base and a steady influx of new players due to the Switch’s popularity. The game mechanics and storytelling unique to the series keep both old and new fans engaged.
TNE: The anticipation is definitely palpable! In closing, if you were to give players one piece of advice before diving into Brothership, what would it be?
JT: I’d say, make sure you have enough storage available and back up your save files! Also, be ready for some laughs—the series is known for its humor, and it won’t disappoint. Enjoy the adventure with Mario and Luigi!
TNE: Great advice, James! Thank you for sharing your insights on Mario & Luigi: Brothership. We can’t wait to see how it unfolds in the gaming community!
