Nintendo’s new RPG game Mario & Luigi: Brothership is set to launch next week on the Nintendo Switch, and we have an update regarding the file size for its eShop version.
According to multiple eShop pages, the new entry in the Mario & Luigi series will require approximately 9.8 GB of space. This figure positions Brothership as the largest title in the series in terms of file size, surpassing the last edition released during the 3DS era, Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey in 2018/19.
If you are considering purchasing a digital copy, it’s worth noting that Nintendo will also offer the game through its Game Voucher service, allowing players to redeem two first-party titles.

The pre-order download is indeed 9.8GB.
The original estimate was 10.0 GB btw, a sweet 200 MB worth of space saved since lol
Why are we estimating? The game was leaked over a week and a half ago.
Relatively big file size; good thing this is one of the games I was able to preorder physically discounted from my usual retailer here in Italy!
I thought this was going to be a co-op game ☹️
Glad to learn
What is that pink creature exactly? Is it living furniture?

Interview: The Future of RPGs with Liam Doolan and Time.news Editor
Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome, everybody! Today we have a special guest, Liam Doolan, a seasoned news writer and reviewer with over 15 years of experience in gaming journalism. Liam is here to share insights about the upcoming RPG, Mario & Luigi: Brothership, which is making waves in the gaming community. Thanks for joining us, Liam!
Liam Doolan (LD): Thanks for having me! I’m excited to dive into the details about Brothership and what it means for the future of RPGs.
TNE: Let’s start with an overview. Brothership is set to launch next week on the Nintendo Switch. What can you tell us about its file size and how it compares to previous titles in the series?
LD: Absolutely! Brothership is quite notable as it will require about 9.8 GB of space, making it the largest title in the Mario & Luigi series. This surpasses the previous record held by Bowser’s Inside Story + Bowser Jr.’s Journey, which was released during the 3DS era. It shows how the series has evolved in terms of game design and depth, requiring more resources.
TNE: That’s significant! What do you think has led to this increase in file size?
LD: The rise in file size can be attributed to several factors. First and foremost, the advancements in graphics and gameplay mechanics mean games now feature richer environments and more complex storytelling. Additionally, the realization of a more expansive world with intricate quests often requires more data. Fans have come to expect more content, and developers are eager to deliver.
TNE: Speaking of developers, Nintendo is offering Brothership through its Game Voucher service, which allows players to redeem two first-party titles. How do you think this will affect sales and player engagement?
LD: The Game Voucher service is a brilliant marketing strategy. It encourages bundled purchases, increasing the potential for sales of Brothership while also promoting other Nintendo titles. This tactic enhances engagement as players are incentivized to buy additional games, leading to a more vibrant gaming community. It’s a win-win!
TNE: As the gaming landscape evolves, RPGs continue to capture the hearts of players worldwide. In your opinion, what does the success of a franchise like Mario & Luigi tell us about the genre itself?
LD: The appeal of Mario & Luigi in the RPG genre highlights a fundamental element of successful games: relatability and humor. The series combines classic RPG elements with lighthearted storytelling that resonates with both younger and older audiences. RPGs thrive on storytelling and character development, and Mario & Luigi excels in both, making it accessible and enjoyable.
TNE: Great insights, Liam. Do you have any predictions for how Brothership might influence future RPGs or Nintendo titles?
LD: I believe Brothership could set a new standard for future RPGs, especially in terms of narrative depth and player experience. As Nintendo continues to push the boundaries of creativity within this genre, we may see other developers inspired to incorporate similar gameplay mechanics and storytelling elements. If successful, it could breathe new life into RPGs and redefine what we expect from them.
TNE: That’s an exciting prospect! Last question—will you be pre-ordering Brothership or opting for a physical copy?
LD: I managed to pre-order a physical copy here in Italy, especially since I got it at a discounted rate from my usual retailer. It’s always fun to add to my collection, and there’s something special about having a physical copy on the shelf!
TNE: Thank you, Liam, for sharing your thoughts on Mario & Luigi: Brothership. It sounds like fans have a lot to look forward to!
LD: Thanks for having me! I can’t wait to see how players react to the game once it launches!
TNE: And to our readers, will you be buying Brothership digitally or physically? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
