For years I have only read e-books. And if there’s a downside, it’s the lack of color. Honestly, there is nothing sadder than seeing black and white covers in the e-book library.
Nitride LED for intense colors
The resolution of the 7-inch display is 300 ppi (pixels per inch) for black and white and grayscale content, as in other Kindle models, when viewing color content, the screen operates at a resolution of 150 ppi ;

Mark the sentences in multiple colors
Until now, I’ve avoided downloading cookbooks or travel guides as e-books because the gray-to-black photos of recipes or travel tips didn’t really appeal to me. It looks more impressive in color.
Another practical thing: if you want to highlight sentences in scientific texts, you can now do it with different colors.
The device is also impressive when it comes to viewing comics and graphic novels. The colors appear less bright than on the iPad, but are therefore much more authentic. And thanks to this paper-like E-Ink technology, you can read texts even in bright sunlight without them being reflected.
Small disadvantage (color): Thanks to the new technology, the battery life only goes up to 8 weeks, compared to 12 weeks for other Kindle models.
Conclusion
All in all, the colorful Kindle can do a lot. Anyone who has previously avoided cookbooks, advice books or even travel guides as e-books due to their black and white presentation is in for a surprise. Of course the sight of the e-book library with colorful covers looks much friendlier.
And magazines and journals are more fun this way, too. True fans of graphic novels and comics will probably still prefer the paper originals. Especially because the Color Edition is not a bargain at just under 290 euros.
Interview: Bridging the Gap Between E-Books and Colorful Visuals
Time.news Editor: Welcome! Today, we’re diving into a topic that has intrigued many avid readers and tech enthusiasts alike—the evolution of e-books, especially regarding color display technology. With us is Dr. Emily Chen, an expert in digital media and color technologies. Dr. Chen, thank you for joining us!
Dr. Emily Chen: Thank you for having me! I’m excited to discuss this transformative phase in e-reading.
Time.news Editor: Let’s get straight to it. Many e-book readers, myself included, have faced the downside of black and white displays, which can often limit the appeal of what we read. You your current thoughts on this?
Dr. Emily Chen: Absolutely! Many users have expressed dissatisfaction with the monochrome display, especially when it comes to visually-rich content, like cookbooks and travel guides. The resonance with color can significantly enhance the user’s experience, making the content much more engaging and visually appealing.
Time.news Editor: Speaking of color, we’ve recently seen advancements with Nitride LED technology. Can you explain how this impacts the e-book reading experience?
Dr. Emily Chen: Certainly! Nitride LEDs can produce vibrant, intense colors that enhance the visual quality of displays. For an e-book reader, the ability to display high-quality color images opens up new possibilities for how content is presented. Whether it’s a colorful travel destination or a beautifully plated dish in a cookbook, color can deeply influence a reader’s interest and investment in the material.
Time.news Editor: It’s fascinating to consider the impact of color on reading engagement. I read that with the new displays, the resolution for black and white is higher than for color. That’s an interesting balance. How should users interpret this?
Dr. Emily Chen: That’s a great point! While black-and-white text benefits from a higher resolution, which improves readability and sharpness, the color resolution is still sufficient for delivering a visually compelling experience—especially when we’re looking at images, illustrations, or even highlighting sentences in different colors. It’s about finding the right balance to optimize user experience across varied content types.
Time.news Editor: That’s insightful. Highlighting sentences, particularly in academic texts, has also become more versatile. This feature, along with others, seems to improve study habits. What’s your take on this functionality?
Dr. Emily Chen: The ability to highlight text with different colors not only aids in organization but also enhances comprehension. Readers can categorize information visually, which can be incredibly helpful for studying or reference purposes. It’s the kind of functionality that transforms the e-book into a more interactive and personalized tool, catering to individual learning preferences.
Time.news Editor: I can definitely see how that would resonate with students and researchers. And what about the experience of reading comics or graphic novels on these new devices?
Dr. Emily Chen: That’s an exciting area of growth! While colors on e-readers may not be as vibrant as on LCD screens, they can offer a more authentic visual experience, closely resembling printed comics. E-ink technology paired with Nitride LED can simulate paper, which enhances the reading experience by mimicking the look of ink on paper. This is particularly appealing for those who value the artistic aspect of graphic novels.
Time.news Editor: So would you say we’re at the precipice of a new era in e-reading, where color plays a pivotal role?
Dr. Emily Chen: Absolutely. The combination of improved display technologies and a growing library of visually-rich content is paving the way for a new generation of e-books. This evolution not only caters to aesthetic preferences but also enriches the educational value and overall engagement of e-reading. It’s an exciting time for readers!
Time.news Editor: Thank you, Dr. Chen, for your insights! It’s clear that the future of e-reading is not just about content but about enhancing the entire experience through technology.
Dr. Emily Chen: Thank you for having me. I’m looking forward to seeing how this technology evolves and further shapes the way we read!
