For next-generation AI leaders such as students, office workers, and young CEOs
Global Leadership Camp hosted by the U.S. Department of State
First time held in Korea
The U.S. Embassy in Korea announced on this day that it successfully completed the ‘2024 Tech Camp Korea’ held at the Teacher Vision Center in Gapyeong-gun, Gyeonggi-do from the 31st to the 3rd of last month. Tech Camp is a global leadership camp hosted by the U.S. Department of State and held at U.S. embassies around the world. This year, we aim to strengthen relationships between Korea’s next-generation AI (artificial intelligence) leaders, including college students, graduate students, office workers, and young CEOs (CEOs), and U.S. experts to discover ideas related to AI governance, ethical AI development, and AI regulation. It was first held in Korea.
The theme of this year’s Tech Camp was ‘Proper and Safe Use of AI Technology.’ Participants will participate in lectures by five invited speakers from the U.S. Department of Education and Culture from global AI companies and two domestic AI experts, discussing AI ethics, AI-based discrimination, prevention and identification of deepfakes (AI-based image synthesis), and ethical entrepreneurship. did it In addition to giving lectures, participants formed teams to come up with solutions for responsible use of AI in education and prevention of unauthorized deepfakes, and each team presented their AI solutions on the last day of the camp.
In relation to this, the U.S. Embassy in Korea said that it will also be given the opportunity to receive initial funds from the U.S. State Department in the future. Previously, Robert Post, Counselor for Public Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Korea, emphasized in his opening speech on the 31st of last month, “As AI continues to change the world, it is important to share your expectations and innovative ideas about AI technology with the older generation.”

Interview between Time.news Editor and AI Ethics Expert
Editor: Welcome, and thank you for joining us today! We’re excited to discuss the recent ‘2024 Tech Camp Korea’ and its implications for future leadership in artificial intelligence. To start, could you tell us a little about yourself and your expertise in AI ethics?
Expert: Thank you for having me! I’m an AI ethics researcher with a focus on the implications of AI technologies in society. I’ve been involved in various initiatives that promote ethical AI development and raise awareness about its potential risks, particularly in areas like discrimination, privacy, and misinformation.
Editor: That’s fantastic! As you might know, the ‘2024 Tech Camp Korea’ was aimed at next-generation AI leaders, including students and young professionals. What are your thoughts on the importance of such events in shaping the future of AI governance?
Expert: Events like the Tech Camp are crucial. They not only bring together young minds to engage with U.S. experts but also provide a platform for discussing vital topics like AI governance and ethical development. By fostering these discussions, we encourage the next generation to think critically about the technology they’re building and its societal impacts.
Editor: One of the themes discussed at the camp was the “Proper and Safe Use of AI Technology.” Can you elaborate on why this is an urgent topic for today’s AI leaders?
Expert: Absolutely. As AI technology evolves, so do its capabilities and potential misuse. It’s critical for leaders to understand the ethical implications of their work, whether it’s addressing biases in AI algorithms or tackling issues like deepfakes, which can be harmful in various contexts. Training leaders to approach these challenges thoughtfully ensures that AI fosters positive innovation rather than exacerbating existing problems.
Editor: Speaking of deepfakes, the camp included discussions on identifying and preventing them. How significant do you think this issue is for not just AI development, but also for society at large?
Expert: Deepfakes represent a significant threat, especially to trust and credibility in information dissemination. The ability to create realistic but fake content raises challenges in our media landscape, impacting everything from personal relationships to political discourse. Educating the next generation on how to combat misinformation and recognize deepfakes is essential for maintaining a fair and truthful society.
Editor: The camp also featured team presentations where participants proposed solutions for responsible AI use. How crucial is collaboration among diverse groups in establishing ethical AI practices?
Expert: Collaboration is key! When individuals from different backgrounds—be it students, office workers, or young CEOs—work together, they bring unique perspectives and expertise to the table. This diversity of thought is vital for creating holistic solutions that address various aspects of AI ethics. Engaging with people who have different experiences can lead to innovative ideas that may not emerge in homogenous groups.
Editor: Robert Post from the U.S. Embassy highlighted the importance of sharing expectations and innovative ideas about AI between generations. How can we cultivate this intergenerational dialogue?
Expert: To foster this dialogue, we need to create more platforms for exchange—whether that’s through workshops, mentorship programs, or discussion forums. It’s essential for young leaders to have the opportunity to voice their perspectives while also learning from seasoned experts. This exchange can lead to more informed and responsible approaches to AI challenges, allowing for a greater collective understanding of the ethics involved.
Editor: Thank you for sharing your insights! As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, it’s encouraging to see initiatives like the ‘2024 Tech Camp’ that prepare future leaders to handle these pressing issues with responsibility and ethical foresight.
Expert: Thank you for having me! I’m excited to see how these young leaders will shape the future of AI responsibly.
