Catlevania in recent years has appeared in television series such as the adaptation currently on Netflix, or in collaborations with other video games such as Dead Cells, Dead by Daylight and Vampire Survivors. Konami seems not to feel ready to launch a new chapter yet, but will give the IP the chance to become a musical.
An ambitious project that will arrive anyway 2025 exclusively inside Japan. Castlevania: Awakening Under the Moon, is the title of the musical that will tell an original story and will have Eternal Teru See and Starry Sky Misaki as protagonists.
Presentations of the musical Castlevania will take place in two locations: Takarazuka Grand Theater and Takarazuka Theater in Tokyo. It will be the first time the series will be adapted into that genre, as we have only had adaptations to animated series.

Interviewer: Welcome to Time.news! Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Dr. Emily Chen, a pop culture analyst and expert in video game adaptations. We’re diving into the exciting world of the Castlevania franchise, especially with the upcoming musical adaptation, Castlevania: Awakening Under the Moon. Emily, thank you for joining us!
Dr. Chen: Thank you for having me! I’m excited to discuss this innovative direction for the Castlevania franchise.
Interviewer: Let’s start with the basics. Castlevania has been a beloved franchise for decades, transitioning from video games to animated series on platforms like Netflix. What do you think has contributed to its enduring appeal?
Dr. Chen: Castlevania has a rich tapestry of gothic themes, compelling characters, and intricate lore. These elements resonate deeply with fans of fantasy and horror. Additionally, the animated series successfully captured the essence of the games while telling fresh stories, making it accessible to both long-time fans and newcomers. This adaptability is critical for maintaining the franchise’s relevance.
Interviewer: Speaking of fresh stories, the upcoming musical, Awakening Under the Moon, is set to tell an original story. How do you think this new format will attract different audiences?
Dr. Chen: Musicals inherently bring a different energy and emotional depth that can appeal to a wider audience. By combining powerful visuals and music with storytelling, Awakening Under the Moon could attract theater-goers and music enthusiasts who might not be gamers. It’s a bold move, but it opens up Castlevania to an entirely new demographic.
Interviewer: Konami’s decision to take this leap into musical theater is quite unexpected. Do you think their hesitation to release a new game indicates a shift in how they view the franchise’s future?
Dr. Chen: It certainly suggests a strategic pivot. Konami may be realizing that the franchise’s brand can thrive beyond just video games. By exploring various media, they can build a multifaceted identity for Castlevania. The musical could be a test to gauge audience interest in alternative storytelling formats, potentially informing future projects.
Interviewer: With its premiere set exclusively in Japan for 2025, what specific cultural elements do you think this musical will incorporate to resonate with its audience?
Dr. Chen: Given Japan’s rich history with both traditional and contemporary musical theater, I anticipate Awakening Under the Moon will fuse gothic aesthetics with local theatrical traditions. Expect intricate set designs reminiscent of old castles, expressive choreography that highlights the battle themes of the franchise, and a soundtrack merging orchestral compositions with modern musical influences.
Interviewer: Are there any particular themes or narratives from the previous Castlevania games that you hope will be reflected in this new musical?
Dr. Chen: Absolutely! Themes of good versus evil, the tragedy of characters like Dracula, and the deep-seated conflicts between humans and supernatural beings are pivotal. A narrative that explores redemption, sacrifice, and the consequences of one’s actions would resonate well with audiences, especially when presented through the emotional medium of music.
Interviewer: Last question, Emily. What impact do you think this musical could have on the video game and entertainment industry as a whole?
Dr. Chen: If successful, it could inspire more game franchises to explore adaptations in different formats, breaking barriers between media. This could lead to a new trend where video game narratives are expanded through theater, film, or even operatic performances. It emphasizes that storytelling goes beyond traditional gaming and opens doors for diverse artistic expressions.
Interviewer: Thank you, Dr. Chen, for your insights on this exciting new chapter in the Castlevania franchise. We can’t wait to see what unfolds with Awakening Under the Moon!
Dr. Chen: Thank you! It was a pleasure discussing this with you. I’m looking forward to seeing how this innovative venture unfolds!
