Time.news – A police officer from Hong Kong remained injured in a clash with an attacker, who subsequently committed suicide, yesterday, marked by tensions for the 24th anniversary of the return to China of the former British colony.

It clash, by a “lone wolf” according to the Hong Kong Security Secretary Chris Tang, took place in the area of Causeway Bay, where they were made three arrests among pro-democracy exponents: according to the reconstructions circulating event in the media, the fifty-year-old attacker would be stabbed after he hit the officer and was taken to the hospital, where he is died. The man would have left a message before making the gesture, a detail that opens up the hypothesis of a homicide-suicide attempt.

The aggression was confirmed by the Hong Kong police themselves on her Facebook page, and was condemned by both chief executive Carrie Lam, which by his deputy, John Lee.

July 1st is a traditionally sensitive day to Hong Kong for the annual march of protesting pro-democracy groups against Beijing. The event was banned by law enforcement for the second consecutive year, on health and safety reasons, but could not be avoided the tension between the police and Democrats: yesterday, a massive deployment of agents blocked roads and cordoned off Victoria Park, the starting point of the annual meeting, to avoid gatherings, and at least at the end of the day 19 arrests.
