“More countries should follow in the footsteps of Israel and the United States which have recognized the Moroccan nature of the Sahara,” Mr. Cilliers told MAP on Tuesday, stressing that this decision is “very positive” in the sense that it will benefit the Morocco on the economic level.
Stressing that Israel is one of the most influential economic players in the world, he noted that this recognition will strengthen economic ties between the two countries and stimulate Israeli investments in Morocco.
Furthermore, Mr. Cilliers returned to Morocco’s economic weight in Africa, recalling that the Kingdom is one of the largest investors on the continent.
In addition, the expert noted that the conflict over the Moroccan Sahara negatively affects economic development in North Africa by hindering regional integration and the building of the Maghreb Union.
A press release from the Royal Cabinet announced, Monday, that His Majesty King Mohammed VI received a letter from the Prime Minister of the State of Israel, Benyamin Netanyahu by which he brought to the Very High Attention of the Sovereign the decision of his country to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
In this regard, the Israeli Prime Minister indicated that this position of his country will be “reflected in all relevant acts and documents of the Israeli Government.” He further stressed that the said decision will be “transmitted to the United Nations, regional and international organizations of which Israel is a member, as well as to all countries with which Israel maintains diplomatic relations.”
In his letter to the Sovereign, the Israeli Prime Minister informed that Israel is positively examining “the opening of a Consulate in the city of Dakhla”, as part of the implementation of this state decision.
Time.news Interview: Recognition of Moroccan Sovereignty over the Sahara
Editor: Welcome to Time.news! Today, we have the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Cilliers, a distinguished expert in international relations. We are discussing the recent recognition by Israel and the United States of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. Mr. Cilliers, thank you for joining us.
Mr. Cilliers: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here.
Editor: To start, could you elaborate on why the recognition from countries like Israel and the United States is significant for Morocco?
Mr. Cilliers: Absolutely. This recognition is not just a matter of diplomatic relations; it has profound implications for Morocco’s territorial integrity and economic prospects. By formally acknowledging Morocco’s claim over the Sahara, these countries are reinforcing Morocco’s position in a region marked by complexity and historical disputes. This is very positive as it creates a more stable environment for investment and development in the area.
Editor: Stability is crucial. How do you think this decision will impact Morocco economically?
Mr. Cilliers: Acknowledgment from such powerful nations opens up opportunities for Morocco in several ways. It can attract foreign investment by enhancing confidence among investors who may have been wary due to the ongoing disputes. With economic development comes job creation and infrastructure improvements, which are vital for Morocco’s long-term growth.
Editor: You mentioned a stable environment for investment. Do you foresee any potential challenges that Morocco might face in leveraging this recognition?
Mr. Cilliers: Certainly. Despite the positive outlook, Morocco will need to navigate its relationships with neighboring countries that may not share the same view on the Sahara issue. Additionally, maintaining a balance between fostering international relations and addressing domestic needs will be critical. The socio-economic disparities within Morocco itself need to be tackled; otherwise, the benefits of international recognition could be undermined.
Editor: That’s a valid point. Moving forward, what role do you think other countries should take in this matter?
Mr. Cilliers: I believe more countries should recognize Morocco’s claims, as this would not only bolster Morocco’s standing but also promote stability in North Africa. Countries looking to invest in the region would benefit from a clearer understanding of territorial claims and the associated legal frameworks.
Editor: In your opinion, what would be the ideal scenario for all parties involved in the Sahara dispute?
Mr. Cilliers: The ideal scenario would be a negotiated political solution that respects Morocco’s sovereignty while also addressing the concerns of the Sahrawi people. This solution should pave the way for development, integration, and cooperation within the region. Ultimately, a peaceful resolution would foster regional stability and prosperity.
Editor: Thank you, Mr. Cilliers, for sharing your insights with us today. It seems that this recognition has the potential to reshape the landscape not only for Morocco but the broader region.
