At least 44 migrants drowned off Moroccan coast

At least 44 refugees have drowned trying to cross from Morocco to Spain. The bodies of at least three women and two babies were recovered after the accident, said the Spanish aid organization Caminando Fronteras on Saturday in the short message service, citing relatives. The people started last week in Tafaja in southern Morocco to reach the Canary Islands, which are around one hundred kilometers away.

According to the information, there were a total of 61 people on the boat. From Morocco, many Africans make the dangerous attempt to reach the EU by sea. The Canary Islands belong to Spain. According to the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, more than 40,000 people came into the country by sea last year. More than 4,400 people drowned during the crossing.
