Are we facing a global conflict? Russia has sought military assistance from China, raising concerns in the West, the Financial Times reports.

U.S. officials said the fear now in the White House was that Beijing would try to undermine Western attempts to win the war in Ukraine.

Sources told the Financial Times that Russia has been seeking military and other assistance from China since the start of the operation. They refused to say exactly what Russia had asked for.

The U.S. is preparing to warn its allies about a situation in which China will provide aid to the Russians. Other government officials have said Russia needs to renew certain weapons as the fighting progresses.

The Chinese embassy refused to comment on the matter and so did the White House.

The report comes as Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Adviser, is on his way to Rome for talks with a senior Chinese official.

Before leaving for a visit, he warned the Chinese not to “bail out” the Russians and save them from sanctions.

In addition to reports that the Chinese may be helping, it seems that relations between the Chinese and the Russians have strengthened greatly in recent years. The Americans say they do not see any attempt by Chinese President Xi Jinping to influence Putin to stop fighting.
