Completed all suspect interrogations… “Tell me everything I did wrong without lying.”
“Money, opinion polls, and nominations are mainly investigated… “I plan on filing a counter-suit.”
Changwon District Prosecutors’ Office Criminal Division 4 (Chief Prosecutor Kim Ho-kyung) summoned and interrogated Mr. Kang, who is suspected of violating the Political Fund Act, as a suspect starting around 9:40 a.m. on this day. This is the eighth prosecution investigation.
Mr. Kang, who left the government building at around 10:40 p.m. and stood in front of reporters, said, “I came out and gave a true statement without any lies, and I also told them that I was wrong about the things I did wrong.” He added, “I told them to call me at any time if there is an additional summons.” .
When asked, “How do you plan to respond in the future?”, he said, “The investigation is over, and I plan to file a countersuit against them for the lawsuits they have filed against me. I don’t know how the further investigation will progress, but I will work sincerely.” .
Regarding ‘what specific part was explained’, he said, “I received a major investigation regarding money, and I also received a lot of attention regarding public opinion polls. “There was also an investigation into the price of nomination,” he said.
Attention is being paid to whether a cross-examination will also take place between former lawmaker Kim and Kang, who have conflicting claims.
In response to a question related to cross-examination, Mr. Kang said, “I will actively conduct (cross-examination). “There is no reason to avoid it,” he said.
Previously, former lawmaker Kim also visited the Changwon District Prosecutors’ Office on the same day to request a provisional return of seized property. When reporters at the scene asked questions about the cross-examination, he said, “I won’t be able
The prosecution is investigating how former lawmaker Kim gave 90 million won to Myeong on several occasions immediately after the 2022 by-elections and whether it was in return for compensation. Prosecutors suspect that this money is compensation for Myung’s help in nominating former lawmaker Kim.
Mr. Kang claims that Mr. Myung helped President Yoon through opinion polls during the last presidential election, and that he got former lawmaker Kim nominated in exchange for receiving poll fees from President Yoon.
On this day, the prosecution is increasing the intensity of its investigation by dispatching four additional investigative prosecutors, including a deputy chief prosecutor and a chief prosecutor, to the Changwon District Prosecutors’ Office investigation team investigating the case related to Mr. Myeong.
There are currently a total of 11 prosecutors in the Myeong case investigation team, and although it is not an official special investigation team, in fact a special investigation team has been formed.
The prosecution summoned and interrogated Mr. Kang, who raised the suspicion, eight times in total, including this day, and former lawmaker Kim was also summoned and interrogated one after another on the 3rd and 4th.
Regarding Mr. Myeong, the investigation department under the Secretariat, which does not have a prosecutor, conducted one suspect investigation last February, and a second suspect investigation is scheduled to be conducted on the 8th.

Title: Unpacking the Legal Storm: An Interview with a Political Ethics Expert on the Kang Hye-kyung Investigation
Interviewer (Time.news Editor): Welcome to Time.news! Today, we are joined by Dr. Jisoo Lee, a political ethics expert and professor at the National University. Dr. Lee, thank you for joining us to discuss the ongoing investigation involving Mr. Kang Hye-kyung and allegations surrounding political interference.
Dr. Jisoo Lee: Thank you for having me. It’s a critical time in our political landscape, and I’m glad to shed some light on these developments.
Editor: Let’s dive into it. Mr. Kang recently underwent his eighth interrogation by prosecutors regarding his suspected violations of the Political Fund Act. From your perspective, why do you think this case has garnered such public and media attention?
Dr. Lee: This case is highly significant because it touches on core issues of political integrity and public trust. Allegations of financial misconduct, especially involving a sitting president’s spouse, can undermine the legitimacy of political processes. People are eager to see justice served and to understand how deep these links might go.
Editor: Indeed. Mr. Kang has indicated that he’s now considering a countersuit against the prosecution. What implications could this have for the case and for similar investigations in the future?
Dr. Lee: A countersuit can create a complex legal battle, complicating the prosecution’s efforts. It can also serve as a strategy to shift public perception. If he successfully proves that he was wronged in the legal process, it may cast doubt on the credibility of the investigation as a whole. This tactic isn’t uncommon in high-profile cases where the stakes are enormous.
Editor: During his interrogation, Mr. Kang mentioned significant topics of investigation including money, opinion polls, and nominations. How do these factors interplay in cases of political corruption?
Dr. Lee: These elements are deeply interconnected. Money in politics often influences decisions and nominations, creating an environment susceptible to corruption. For instance, if funds are being exchanged for political favors, this compromises the ethical framework of governance. Moreover, public opinion polls can be manipulated to benefit political figures, distorting democratic processes and creating unfair advantages.
Editor: You raised an interesting point about public perception. With conflicting claims from Mr. Kang and former lawmaker Kim, how important is cross-examination in establishing the truth?
Dr. Lee: Cross-examination is vital. It allows the prosecution to test the credibility of witnesses and evidence, and in cases with contradictory testimonies, it becomes crucial for uncovering lies or inconsistencies. Mr. Kang’s willingness to engage in cross-examination suggests he is confident and wants to clear his name. It’s a strategic move that can either strengthen or weaken his position depending on how it unfolds.
Editor: The prosecutors are ramping up their investigation by adding more personnel to the team. What does this indicate about the seriousness of the allegations?
Dr. Lee: The increase in investigative staff signifies that the prosecution views this case as particularly serious and complex. They likely anticipate complications that require more resources. An expanded team often means they’re preparing for a rigorous examination of evidence and witness testimonies.
Editor: Looking ahead, what potential outcomes do you foresee from this ongoing investigation?
Dr. Lee: Several outcomes are possible. The investigation might result in legal consequences for those involved, depending on the findings. Alternatively, if the evidence is not compelling, it could lead to a dismissal of the charges, which may further influence public trust in the prosecution and political institutions. Regardless, this case is poised to influence future discussions on political accountability in South Korea.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Lee, for your insights on this nuanced situation. As this investigation unfolds, it will undoubtedly keep the public and the media engaged.
Dr. Lee: Thank you for highlighting such an important topic. It’s crucial for citizens to remain informed as these events develop.
