The politician points out that significant changes have been introduced in every branch of “Progressive” responsibility, and especially in the defense sector, efforts have been made to strengthen Latvia’s defense capabilities.
Such a statement by “Progressives” follows the meeting of the opposition party “Apvienatais listis” (AS) with Defense Minister Andris Sprudus (P). After the meeting, AS deputies have called on Prime Minister Evikas Siliņa (JV) to replace Spruda.
Shuvayevs believes that the tactics of AS deputies – trying to destroy the reputation of the industry in order to potentially enter the government - is a politically irresponsible step.
Every “Progressive” minister takes cooperation with the parliament seriously, regularly visiting various Saeima commissions to provide answers to the questions of MPs of all factions, says the party’s co-chairman.
The minister of defense allegedly gave detailed answers to every question of the members of the AS faction, explaining the drone incident and the improvements already made, and also indicated that layered air defense is being purposefully introduced, the coalition politician explains. The minister gave “precise answers” regarding financial supervision at the political level, noting that the construction program is currently being audited and the supervision criteria are being reviewed. In addition, the minister presented his vision on the long-term financing of the industry and the development of the military industry, says Shuvayev.
“Progressives” respect the right of the ”United List” to demand the minister’s resignation, however, the rhetoric reflected in the AS statement after the meeting with the minister unreasonably undermines trust in the industry,” Shuvayev says, emphasizing that in these geopolitical conditions, strengthening national defense is the most important duty not only of the government , but also to the Saeima. The AS faction’s efforts to discredit the industry cannot be evaluated as national, thinks the co-chairman of “Progresīvo”.
The “progressive” ministers will continue to be responsive to the wishes of the Saeima factions to meet with the MPs, and appreciate the opposition’s critical point of view on shortcomings in various sectors, Shuvayev promises.
Interview between the Editor of Time.news and Military Defense Expert Dr. Anna Vitkov
Editor: Good afternoon, Dr. Vitkov, and thank you for joining us today. Following the latest developments in Latvia’s political landscape, especially concerning defense, what are your thoughts on the recent strong statements made by the ”Progressives” regarding their changes in defense policy?
Dr. Vitkov: Good afternoon, and thank you for having me. The statements made by the “Progressives” highlight their commitment to enhancing Latvia’s defense capabilities, especially given the current geopolitical climate in Europe. Strengthening defense is essential for any nation, particularly in a region that has seen escalating tensions.
Editor: Absolutely. We saw that the opposition, “Apvienatais listis,” met with Defense Minister Andris Sprudus and is now calling for his replacement. What do you think is driving this demand, especially in the context of the current government’s defense initiatives?
Dr. Vitkov: The call for Sprudus’s replacement is indicative of political maneuvering. The ”Apvienatais listis” may perceive this as an opportunity to undermine the current administration and position themselves for greater influence. However, from a defense perspective, continuity and experience are crucial, especially during such transformative times in defense policy.
Editor: Shuvayevs, a prominent figure in the “Progressives,” labeled the tactics of the AS deputies as politically irresponsible. Do you agree with this sentiment? Why or why not?
Dr. Vitkov: Yes, I do agree. Attacking the credibility of key figures in the defense sector can be seen as reckless, particularly when national security is at stake. This type of political behavior can create unnecessary instability and could hinder ongoing efforts to fortify Latvia’s defense posture, which should, in my opinion, be above party politics.
Editor: You mentioned the importance of collaboration and continuity in defense policy. The “Progressives” have emphasized their commitment to working closely with the Saeima. How important is this cooperation for effective defense policymaking?
Dr. Vitkov: It is absolutely vital. Effective defense policymaking requires a unified approach from both the government and parliament. Regular interactions, as the “Progressives” are pursuing, foster trust and ensure that all stakeholders are aligned on security priorities. Without that collaboration, policy implementation can become fragmented, and that could ultimately weaken Latvia’s defense capabilities.
Editor: As we look ahead, what measures do you think should be prioritized by the government to strengthen Latvia’s defense capabilities further?
Dr. Vitkov: I believe that investing in modernization of military equipment, increasing defense budgets, and fostering international partnerships will be crucial. Additionally, focusing on strengthening cyber-defense mechanisms is increasingly important given the nature of modern warfare. Engaging with NATO and aligning our strategies with those of European allies will enhance our resilience.
Editor: Those are insightful points, Dr. Vitkov. As the situation evolves, we’ll be sure to keep an eye on how these political dynamics impact Latvia’s defense capabilities. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us today.
Dr. Vitkov: Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss such vital topics.
