In the resolution to create the friendship group with the Moroccan parliament for the period 2022-2026, it is notably emphasized that the two vice-presidents of the Senate are also members of the group, which gives it greater weight at the height of the interest and consideration shown by the Colombian Senate to relations with Morocco.
The friendship group is chaired by German Blanco, former speaker of the House of Representatives and member of the first Senate committee. He represents the Conservative Party (member of the ruling alliance).
In addition to Roy Barreras from the Historic Pact of President Gustavo Petro and German Blanco, the members of the friendship group are respectively Miguel Angel Pinto Hernandez, first vice-president of the Senate, representing the Liberal Party (member of the ruling alliance), Honorio Miguel Henriquez Pinedo, second vice president of the Senate, representing the Democratic Center Party (opposition).
The friendship group with Morocco is joined by eminent figures from the political scene in Colombia, both from the majority and the opposition.
It should also be noted that of the ten members of the group, seven come from the ranks of the ruling alliance which supports President Petro and three are members of opposition parties, which means that the question of good relations with Morocco is unanimous within the political class, majority and opposition combined
In addition, the parties from which the ten members of the friendship group come represent 88.8% of the composition of the Senate.
Last November, Roy Barreras estimated, following a meeting with the Moroccan ambassador to Colombia, Farida Loudaya, that Morocco is a “strategic ally” of Colombia in the Arab region, highlighting the diplomatic relations of half a century that unites the two countries.
This declaration by Barreras followed a motion adopted last October by a majority of 63 senators out of 108, and in which the Upper House in Colombia expressed its ”categorical rejection” and “total disagreement” with President Petro’s decision to recognize the nickname “rasd”.
The quality of the members integrating the friendship group with Morocco and the unequivocal terms of last November’s motion send a strong message that the Colombian Senate is working, through concrete actions, to preserve relations with Morocco by supporting its territorial integrity.

Interviewer (Time.news Editor): Thank you for joining us today! We’re excited to delve into the recent establishment of the friendship group between the Colombian parliament and Morocco. To kick things off, could you outline the significance of this group and its members?
Expert: Thank you for having me! The creation of the friendship group between Colombia and Morocco is a major step forward in diplomatic relations. It highlights a commitment to strengthening ties between the two nations over the next four years. The participation of key figures such as German Blanco—who chairs the group—along with vice-presidents of the Senate, adds considerable weight to this initiative.
Editor: Indeed! It seems like this group is representative of a broader political coalition. You mentioned German Blanco from the Conservative Party and Roy Barreras from the Historic Pact. How does this political diversity influence the group’s efficacy?
Expert: That’s an excellent point. The inclusion of members from both the Conservative Party and the Historic Pact signifies a united front across political lines, which is crucial for fostering dialogue and cooperation. When politicians from different parties come together for a common cause, it not only enhances the legitimacy of the group but also showcases a more comprehensive approach to diplomatic relations that can benefit both nations.
Editor: It’s fascinating to observe this bipartisan support. What specific goals do you believe the friendship group aims to achieve in its interactions with Morocco?
Expert: The primary goals likely include promoting economic collaboration, cultural exchanges, and political dialogue. Given Morocco’s strategic position in Africa and its emerging role in international trade, Colombia might be looking to strengthen partnerships in sectors like agriculture, technology, and tourism. Moreover, cultural ties could enrich both nations, fostering a better understanding and appreciation of each other’s heritage.
Editor: Speaking of cultural exchanges, how important is public awareness and engagement in this friendship group’s initiatives?
Expert: Public engagement is vital! The more citizens are informed about these diplomatic efforts, the more support and legitimacy they will generate. Initiatives could include cultural festivals, educational programs, and even business forums that highlight the potential benefits of this relationship. Engaging the public fosters a sense of ownership and interest in international cooperation, which is essential for long-term success.
Editor: Absolutely! Moving forward, what potential challenges do you foresee for the friendship group, and how might they overcome them?
Expert: One challenge could be differing priorities between the two nations, especially if domestic issues in Colombia take precedence. However, maintaining open lines of communication and establishing clear goals from the outset can help avert misunderstandings. Additionally, fostering relationships at both governmental and grassroots levels can provide a buffer against political changes that might impact the friendship.
