In a statement to MAP, on the sidelines of its participation in the third edition of the Conference on Oil, Gas and Energy of Countries Bordering the Coastal Basin (Mauritania, Senegal, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Guinea Conakry), opened in the Mauritanian capital, Ms. Benkhadra affirmed that the Morocco–Nigeria gas pipeline project, thanks to the enlightened vision of the leaders of the two countries, is part of this development perspective.
Thanks to the enlightened vision of HM the King aimed at strengthening African cooperation, Morocco will spare no effort to support the energy development of the region within the framework of this project, considered as a lever for regional integration, affirmed Ms. Benkhadra .
The Director General of ONHYM noted that this ambitious project will also have a positive impact, particularly in terms of energy security, the development of the mining industry, and the supply of energy to African and European countries.
Organized under the theme “Expanding energy opportunities for Africa’s new horizons”, the conference was attended by energy ministers from several countries, international partners, experts and representatives of cooperation agencies and higher energy training schools.
Interview with Ms. Amina Benkhadra, Director General of ONHYM, on the Morocco-Nigeria Gas Pipeline Project
Time.news Editor (TNE): Thank you for joining us today, Ms. Benkhadra. Let’s dive right into the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline project. How do you see this initiative impacting energy cooperation across Africa?
Ms. Amina Benkhadra (AB): Thank you for having me. The Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline project is pivotal for enhancing energy cooperation in Africa. As emphasized in our recent discussions at the Conference on Oil, Gas and Energy, this project illustrates the shared vision of our leaders aimed at fostering regional integration. Not only does it promise to enhance energy security for our nations, but it also serves as a foundation for broader collaboration on energy resources.
TNE: That’s indeed significant. Can you elaborate on the expected benefits of this project for the mining industry and energy supply in the region?
AB: Certainly. The pipeline is designed not only to transport gas but also to stimulate the development of the mining industry in Morocco and beyond. By securing a reliable energy source, we can attract investments and facilitate the growth of industrial activities. Furthermore, this project will enable us to supply energy not just to African countries but also to European markets, thereby positioning Morocco as a critical player in the energy landscape.
TNE: The theme of the conference was “Expanding Energy Opportunities for Africa’s New Horizons.” How does this project align with that theme?
AB: The Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline embodies the spirit of the theme. It opens new horizons for energy development across the continent. By reinforcing infrastructure and creating partnerships among neighboring countries, we can expand our energy capabilities and explore additional opportunities—be it in renewable energy sources or enhancing the existing fossil fuel market. This project symbolizes a commitment to a more integrated and sustainable energy future for Africa.
TNE: In terms of implementation, what practical support can Morocco provide to ensure the project’s success and the overall energy development of the region?
AB: Morocco is prepared to leverage its expertise and resources to support the pipeline’s success. We are committed to providing technical assistance, sharing best practices, and creating conducive policies that will facilitate the project. Moreover, we are keen to collaborate with energy ministers and international partners to mobilize investments that are critical for this ambitious venture.
TNE: As an expert in the field, what advice would you give to stakeholders who are considering engaging with regional energy projects?
AB: My advice would be to engage actively and be open to collaboration. Energy projects like the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline rely heavily on strong partnerships, both at local and international levels. Stakeholders must be willing to contribute to a shared vision, understand the regional dynamics, and invest in long-term sustainable solutions. Embracing innovation and flexibility will be key in navigating the ever-evolving energy landscape.
TNE: Thank you, Ms. Benkhadra, for sharing your insights on this transformative project. It’s clear that the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline represents a significant step toward enhanced energy security and regional cooperation.
AB: Thank you for the opportunity to discuss this important initiative. I am optimistic about the future of energy in Africa and the potential for further collaboration among our nations.
