The Belgian candidate for the next European Commissioner Hadja Labib received the initial approval of the MEPs after a hearing in the European Parliament in Brussels, local media reported. Labib will be responsible in the next composition of the European Commission for equality, crisis response and humanitarian aid.
At the hearing, Labib said European values of equality and empathy made her who she is today, a descendant of Algerian immigrants who rose to become a TV presenter and then foreign minister in the outgoing Belgian government. Labib was preferred by EC President Ursula von der Leyen as the Belgian candidate in a race against former European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders, including because she is a woman and her presence in the new composition of European Commissioners ensures better gender equality.
The media today noted that last night the Hungarian candidate for European Commissioner for Health, Oliver Varhei, did not achieve the necessary approval at the hearing and will receive further written questions. Until now, Varhey has been responsible for the enlargement of the EU in the current composition of the EC, BTA reported.
The EP is expected to vote on the full composition of the new commission by the end of November. Until then, each candidate for European commissioner must receive the prior approval of MEPs after a three-hour oral exam.

Editor: Welcome, everyone, to this edition of Time.news Interviews! Today, we are exploring an exciting development in European politics. Joining us is Dr. Elena Moreau, a political analyst with a deep understanding of the European Commission’s inner workings and its impact on EU policy. Thank you for being here today, Dr. Moreau!
Dr. Moreau: Thank you for having me! I’m excited to discuss this crucial moment for the European Commission and the implications of Hadja Labib’s candidacy.
Editor: Let’s dive right into it. Hadja Labib recently received initial approval from the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) following her hearing. Can you tell us a bit about the significance of this approval?
Dr. Moreau: Absolutely. The initial approval from MEPs is a critical step in the selection process for a European Commissioner. It suggests that Labib has garnered enough support to progress to the next stage, which is essential given that the European Commission plays a vital role in shaping EU policies across various sectors, from economics to environmental issues.
Editor: What do you think might have impressed the MEPs during her hearing?
Dr. Moreau: Well, MEPs often look for candidates who demonstrate a strong understanding of EU values and the ability to navigate complex political landscapes. Labib likely showcased her expertise in key areas that align with the Commission’s goals, as well as her ability to collaborate with different member states and stakeholders.
Editor: Speaking of collaboration, what challenges do you foresee Labib facing as she transitions into this role?
Dr. Moreau: One significant challenge will be addressing the diverse interests of EU member states. Each country has its unique priorities and concerns, and Labib will need to balance these effectively while advocating for broader European goals. Additionally, she will likely confront pressing issues such as climate change, migration, and economic recovery post-pandemic, all of which require swift and coordinated action.
Editor: Absolutely, it sounds like a demanding yet crucial position. How does Labib’s candidacy reflect broader trends within the EU regarding gender and diversity?
Dr. Moreau: Labib’s nomination is emblematic of the EU’s ongoing push for greater diversity in leadership roles. Having a female commissioner from Belgium highlights the Commission’s commitment to representation. This shift towards inclusivity is essential not just for fairness but also for bringing different perspectives to decision-making, which can ultimately lead to more effective policies.
Editor: It’s certainly a step in the right direction. Can you share your thoughts on how Labib could leverage her position to promote change?
Dr. Moreau: Labib has the opportunity to champion policies that focus on sustainability and social equity. By collaborating with other commissioners and stakeholders, she can advocate for significant reforms that address inequalities and advance the EU’s climate agenda. Her ability to build coalitions will be crucial in pushing these initiatives forward.
Editor: That’s an insightful overview, Dr. Moreau. As we look ahead, what can we anticipate in terms of public response to her candidacy?
Dr. Moreau: The public response is often influenced by how well she communicates her vision and engages with citizens. If she effectively articulates her plans and demonstrates a willingness to address the public’s concerns, she may garner strong support. Conversely, any missteps or failure to connect with the populace could result in skepticism regarding her capabilities.
