Interview between Time.news Editor and Arnaud Thorette, Viola Player and Musician at the Saint-Céré Festival
Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome, Arnaud Thorette! We’re excited to have you with us today to discuss the upcoming 2024 edition of the Saint-Céré festival. Your performance, alongside Ensemble Contraste, seems to be a highlight this year. Can you give us an overview of what audiences can expect from your show, “My Most Beautiful Love Story”?
Arnaud Thorette (AT): Thank you for having me! The performance is a tribute to the beloved French singer Barbara. We aim to capture the essence of her repertoire, blending her powerful lyrics with contemporary interpretation. Over the span of 75 minutes, we’ll take the audience on an emotional journey through her most iconic songs, highlighting both the beauty and the depth of her work.
TNE: That sounds captivating! Barbara’s music is known for its emotional weight. How do you and the Ensemble Contraste plan to convey that emotion during the performance?
AT: We believe that music is meant to be experienced, not just heard. Every musician brings their own interpretation to the piece, and together we strive to evoke the feelings that Barbara instilled in her songs. I play the viola, which has a rich, warm tone that complements the vocals beautifully. Our arrangement also allows for moments of intimate connection between the musicians and the audience, making it a truly immersive experience.
TNE: It certainly sounds like a heartfelt homage. The Saint-Céré festival attracts a diverse audience every year. Can you share how the festival has evolved since its inception in 1979 and how it aims to cater to this expanding audience?
AT: Absolutely! Over the years, Saint-Céré has become not only a platform for classical music but a celebration of various artistic expressions. From opera and musical theatre to contemporary creations, every year we strive to diversify the program to engage different demographics. The festival is set in stunning venues throughout the town, like the Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux and the Théâtre de l’Factory, which enhances the overall experience and makes the arts more accessible to everyone.
TNE: That’s fascinating! You mentioned that the festival this year emphasizes the ‘re-reading of great figures and myths’. Can you elaborate on that theme and how your performance fits into it?
AT: The theme encourages us to explore and reinterpret classic pieces in a modern context. While we respect Barbara’s original compositions, our approach allows us to bring out fresh perspectives—combining her timeless music with contemporary aesthetics. This kind of reinterpretation sparks lively conversations about art’s relevance today, making it exciting for both long-time fans and new listeners.
TNE: It sounds like a unique and enriching experience! As a performer, what are you most looking forward to at this year’s festival?
AT: I’m really looking forward to the atmosphere of the festival—the gathering of artists, musicians, and audiences all passionate about the arts. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with people who share our enthusiasm and love for music. I’m equally excited to see the other performances and the diverse array of talent gathered there.
TNE: It indeed sounds like a fantastic event! Lastly, for those who are yet to experience the magic of the Saint-Céré festival, why should they attend this year?
AT: The festival is a celebration of creativity and a showcase of how art can transcend time and connect people. Whether you’re a fan of classical music or are simply curious about the arts, there’s something for everyone. Plus, the beautiful backdrop of Saint-Céré itself makes for an unforgettable experience. You don’t just come for the performances; you become part of an artistic community for two weeks—and that’s something truly special.
TNE: Thank you, Arnaud! We can’t wait to see you perform and experience the beauty of the festival. Best of luck with “My Most Beautiful Love Story”!
AT: Thank you! I hope to see many new faces at the festival. It’s going to be a beautiful celebration of music and culture!
