Southern Port workers joined the Histadrut. Today, a process of organizing the workers in the new southern port located in Ashdod was completed, and its activities began several months ago. Avi Edri, chairman of the Histadrut’s Transportation Workers’ Union, and Haim Shayev, Ashdod’s chairman of the Histadrut, informed the port’s director general, Eyal Baruch.
The Histadrut said that the association’s move was a blow to the background of the desire of the employees of the southern port to secure their employment future and to take care of improving their rights at work. The current goal is to enter into negotiations with the management, in preparation for the signing of the first collective agreement in the port.
The chairman of the Histadrut, Arnon Bar-David, said: “I congratulate the workers who joined the Histadrut – the home of the workers in Israel, and thank all the partners who led the move. We will work to preserve the rights of the workers, for the success of the port, and in cooperation with all parties. “
The chairman of the Histadrut’s Transport Workers’ Union, Avi Edri, said: “I am proud of the workers of the Southern Port who have taken their employment future into their own hands. We will bring all the strengths and experience of the Histadrut to negotiations with the port management, for the benefit of the workers and the company alike. “
The chairman of the Ashdod region in the Histadrut, Haim Shayev, said: “This is a historic move that will ensure the employment security of the workers, even in the new port. “Anyone who thought of operating a port with unorganized workers was wrong today.”
The director general of the Histadrut’s workers’ union division, Amichai Stinger, said: “The workers were unionized against the background of their desire to be in a house as large as the Histadrut, which unites the port workers in Israel.”
The chairman of the action committee at the southern port, Alon Elimelech, said: “We are confident that the management will cooperate with us, with the understanding that we have a common interest: the good of our customers and the shortening of waiting that currently exists outside Israel’s seaports.”
