AEK were the big winners from Saturday’s Super League games (9/11/24), with Union capitalizing on Aris‘ win to take Thessaloniki into 1st place. Important doubles for Atromitos, results and goals of the first matches of the 10th matchday.
AEK beat Asteras Tripoli 3-0 at the OPAP Arena and climbed to the top of the Super League standings, with the Union having no problem against Arcades who finished the game with 9 players. With these three points now, the “yellow and black” reached Aris in 1st place in the Super League standings, with both teams having 21 points each.
At the same time, AEK kept a clean sheet for one more game this year, with the “yellow and black” defending the best league and conceding only 4 goals.
Aris, who lost 2-1 against Panaitolikos in a game with a dramatic finish, picked up their second win in this year’s championship, and Thessaloniki fans had strong complaints from referee Tsimenterides. At the same time, the coach of the guests, Akis Manzios, as a sign of protest, did not make statements, in a game that had several VAR interventions.
In the other game of the day, Atromitos beat Panserraikos 3-2 away from home and managed to move up in the standings, in the “battle” in which Peristeriotes are fighting for a place in the top eight. For his part, Panserraikos seems stuck for the win against AEK, with the ”lions” losing for the second game in a row and staying in the last places.

Interview: The Rise of AEK in the Super League - A Conversation with Football Expert Dr. Elena Sampson
Time.news Editor: Welcome, Dr. Sampson! It’s great to have you here to discuss the latest developments in the Super League, especially AEK’s stunning performance last weekend. AEK’s 3-0 victory over Asteras Tripoli seems to have propelled them to the top of the standings. What does this victory mean for them moving forward?
Dr. Sampson: Thank you for having me! AEK’s victory is indeed significant. Not only did they claim three crucial points, but they also demonstrated their dominance with a solid clean sheet. Their ability to climb alongside Aris in the standings with both teams now sitting at 21 points shows how competitive this season is shaping up to be.
Time.news Editor: You mentioned the clean sheet. AEK has conceded only 4 goals this season, which is impressive. How crucial is their defense to their current success?
Dr. Sampson: Absolutely, their defense has been the backbone of their success. A reliable defense not only prevents goals but also boosts the team’s confidence. AEK’s backline has been cohesive and disciplined, allowing them to control games. This kind of defensive strength often translates into more offensive opportunities as well, creating a robust team dynamic.
Time.news Editor: On the other hand, Aris suffered a setback with a dramatic 2-1 loss to Panaitolikos, which has left their fans quite frustrated. How do you see this affecting their morale and performance in the weeks to come?
Dr. Sampson: Such losses can be quite detrimental to team morale, especially given the complaints from their fans about officiating. When players feel hard done by a referee’s decisions, it can lead to frustration that impacts their performance. However, it’s also an opportunity for the coaching staff to rally the team and refocus them on their objectives. It’s all about how they respond to adversity.
Time.news Editor: With AEK and Aris neck and neck at the top, what will be the key battles to watch in the upcoming matches—not just for these teams, but across the league?
Dr. Sampson: The key will be consistency. Both teams need to maintain their form, especially in critical matches against mid-table rivals who can be unpredictable. Also, individual player performances will matter; players need to step up not just during high-stakes matches but throughout the season. As we approach the midpoint of the season, injuries and fatigue will start to play a role, so squad depth will also be crucial.
Time.news Editor: Speaking of player performance, which players from AEK and Aris should fans keep an eye on as the season progresses?
Dr. Sampson: For AEK, their forwards, who can create and finish scoring opportunities, will be essential in tight games. If they can maintain their scoring form, it bodes well for the team. As for Aris, keep an eye on their key playmakers; if they can dictate the pace, it will give them a fighting chance in every match.
Time.news Editor: as we look ahead, what do you think will be the defining factor in who ultimately secures the Super League title this season?
Dr. Sampson: It will come down to consistency, resilience, and maybe a bit of luck. The ability to handle pressure, especially in critical matches towards the season’s end, will be quite telling. The performances in the head-to-head matches between title contenders will also be pivotal in deciding who takes home the trophy.
Time.news Editor: Thank you, Dr. Sampson! It’s been a pleasure discussing the dynamics of the Super League with you, and we look forward to seeing how the season unfolds.
Dr. Sampson: It’s my pleasure! I’m excited to see how it all plays out.
