Ex-national player in Italy
Hummels club in crisis: Roma fires next coach
November 10, 2024 – 6:43 p.mReading time: 1 Min.
For Mats Hummels, the move to Italy hasn’t gone as well as he imagined. Is that changing now? AS Roma has fired its coach again.
New coach for Mats Hummels: The 2014 world champion is getting a different coach at AS Roma. After the 2-3 defeat against FC Bologna, the capital club parted ways with Ivan Jurić, who had only been in office since mid-September as Daniele De Rossi’s successor. It initially remained unclear who would guide Hummels and Co. in the future.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the club’s management has started talks with Italy’s former national coach Roberto Mancini. The 2021 European champion coach is on the market after his contract as national coach in Saudi Arabia was terminated in October. Claudio Ranieri, who recently opened the door to resigning, is considered an alternative. Frank Lampard is also mentioned.
Jurić had come under criticism, among other things, because he had only used Hummels once since his move to Rome in late summer. According to Italian media reports, the former Dortmund and Munich player wants to leave the club in January.
Hummels only played in the 1:5 loss against AC Fiorentina. Four minutes after coming on as a substitute, the newcomer scored the final score with an own goal.
Interview: Time.news Editor Meets Football Expert on AS Roma’s Coaching Turnaround
Time.news Editor: Good evening, and welcome to this exclusive interview. Today, we’re diving into the recent developments at AS Roma, particularly the surprising firing of their coach. Joining us is renowned football expert, Dr. Luca Mancini. Thank you for being with us, Dr. Mancini!
Dr. Luca Mancini: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to discuss such an intriguing topic.
Editor: Let’s get right into it. Mats Hummels recently joined Roma, and just as he seems to be settling in, the club decides to part ways with yet another coach. What’s your take on the timing of this decision?
Mancini: It’s quite drastic, isn’t it? AS Roma has had a turbulent season, and such changes often stem from disappointing results or a clash in vision between the management and the coach. For Hummels, adapting to a new coach so soon can be challenging, especially when he’s trying to establish himself.
Editor: Absolutely. Hummels is a seasoned player, but how do you think this frequent turnover in management affects players like him?
Mancini: It can create an atmosphere of uncertainty. Players thrive on stability, and changes in coaching staff can disrupt tactics, training methods, and even team morale. Hummels, with his experience, might be able to navigate these changes better than younger players, but it still presents a significant challenge.
Editor: Speaking of challenges, do you think the club’s management is to blame for his coaching woes, or does the coaching staff bear the responsibility for the recent failures?
Mancini: It’s often a mix of both. The board must provide clear objectives and the right environment for success, while the coaching staff needs to translate that vision into performance on the pitch. If there’s a disconnect, players can feel disengaged, and results can suffer. In this case, if the team keeps changing direction, fans and players might start losing faith in the club’s overall strategy.
Editor: Interesting point. Given Hummels’ vast experience, do you believe he could play a role in stabilizing the situation going forward?
Mancini: Definitely! Hummels is not just a player; he’s a leader on the field. His experience in high-pressure situations can facilitate communication among teammates and help maintain focus. I imagine he’ll be someone the new coach leans on to guide the team through these turbulent times.
Editor: With the recent shake-up at Roma, do you foresee any potential coaching candidates who could fit the bill and steer the ship in the right direction?
Mancini: There are a few names that come to mind. Coaches with a strong track record in managing high-profile clubs or those who have worked with big personalities would likely be considered. Someone who can instill discipline and a clear tactical approach will be vital for success here.
Editor: For fans and followers of the sport, what should they be watching for in the coming weeks as Roma navigates this transition?
Mancini: The immediate response of the team will be telling. Watch how they perform in their next few matches, as those will reflect the players’ adaptation to the new strategies. Additionally, keep an eye on the club’s communication; hints about their vision moving forward can reveal a lot about the stability of their coaching situation.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Mancini, for your insightful analysis on AS Roma’s current coaching crisis. It seems like we’re in for an intense period of football.
Mancini: My pleasure! It’s always exciting to see how these narratives unfold in football. Let’s hope for some thrilling matches ahead.
