“What trauma are you trying to process here?” Sonia Witten asks the trauma course at Foston Hall Prison. “Abuse”, “rape”, “violence” – the inmates’ answers are not surprising. Many of those serving their sentences here have previously been victims of a crime themselves. Take Ruth Kelly, for example, who has been abused her whole life and can’t control her emotions. Their outbursts of anger make it difficult to treat each other with respect, which is a top priority here at Foston Hall.
