How does the integration of ICT technology in performances like 꿈꾸는 말 influence the future of theater and cultural engagement?
Interview between Time.news Editor and Cultural Expert, Dr. Jisoo Lee
Time.news Editor: Welcome, Dr. Lee! Thank you for joining us today to discuss the exciting new musical, 꿈꾸는 말, being held in Suncheon City. To start, could you tell us what makes this performance unique in the landscape of cultural events today?
Dr. Jisoo Lee: Thank you for having me! 꿈꾸는 말 is groundbreaking because it blends traditional musical theater with cutting-edge ICT technology. This innovative approach not only enhances the storytelling experience but also engages younger audiences in a way that traditional performances might not. By integrating media mapping technology, the stage can transform into various environments, making the experience more immersive for the audience.
Time.news Editor: That sounds fascinating! Can you elaborate on the story itself? What themes and messages do you think 꿈꾸는 말 conveys, especially for its young audience?
Dr. Jisoo Lee: Absolutely! The narrative centers around a character named Rihyo, who travels back in time to meet Choi Seok, learning about the value of Palma, a spirit representative of Suncheon. This time-travel element can teach children about history and cultural heritage while sparking their imagination and curiosity. The themes of exploration, identity, and the significance of one’s home and roots are beautifully woven into the story, making it both entertaining and educational.
Time.news Editor: It’s wonderful to see such a thoughtful approach to children’s programming. How do you think the use of ICT in performances like this influences the future of theater and arts?
Dr. Jisoo Lee: The incorporation of ICT represents a significant shift in how we approach live performances. It opens up endless possibilities for creativity, allowing for dynamic interactions between the performers and the audience. This trend could lead to a broader transformation within the theater world, making performances more accessible to diverse audiences and encouraging the integration of technology across all artistic disciplines.
Time.news Editor: You mentioned that this project is part of the Jeonnam Information and Culture Industry Promotion Agency’s initiative. What does this mean for local cultural development in areas like Suncheon?
Dr. Jisoo Lee: It’s a critical step in promoting regional cultural development. Support from agencies like Jeonnam helps foster creativity and encourages local artists and companies to collaborate on innovative projects. This not only enhances the cultural landscape of Suncheon but also draws attention to the region, potentially boosting tourism and local pride in the arts. When cities invest in creative projects, they cultivate a richer cultural identity that can benefit the entire community.
Time.news Editor: That’s an excellent point. With the shows being free and open for families, how do you see the potential impact on community engagement?
Dr. Jisoo Lee: Free performances like 꿈꾸는 말 allow families who might not have access to traditional theater to experience the arts together. This fosters an appreciation for culture and the performing arts from a young age. Moreover, it encourages community bonding and gives families a shared experience, which is invaluable in today’s fast-paced world. When people come together for such events, it strengthens the social fabric of the community.
Time.news Editor: Before we wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share about the significance of this musical and its role in the cultural narrative of South Korea?
Dr. Jisoo Lee: Certainly! 꿈꾸는 말 stands at the intersection of tradition and modernity—it honors the cultural heritage of Suncheon while embracing contemporary technology. This duality is key to ensuring that the arts remain relevant and engaging to younger generations. As we witness more initiatives like this across South Korea, we can look forward to a vibrant future for our cultural narrative, where innovation and tradition coexist beautifully.
Time.news Editor: Thank you, Dr. Lee, for your insights. It’s truly exciting to see such innovation in the arts, especially aimed at inspiring the next generation. We look forward to seeing how 꿈꾸는 말 resonates with its audience!
Dr. Jisoo Lee: Thank you for having me! I’m excited to see how it unfolds as well and hope it inspires many young hearts.
