Joined the U.S. national team five years after retirement
Return to action at next month’s World Cup in Switzerland
Opens the possibility of competing for the 5th Olympic Games
‘Ski Queen’ Lindsey Vonn (40, USA) returns as a skier 5 years and 9 months after announcing her retirement. The United States Ski and Snowboard Association announced on the 14th, “Von will join the U.S. Alpine Ski Team.”
Bonn is an Alpine skier who has won three Olympic medals (one gold, two bronze medals), eight International Ski Federation (FIS) World Championship medals (two gold, three silver, three bronze medals), and a four-time World Cup overall winner. He is a ski legend. Vonn left the slopes after winning a total of 82 World Cups, which was the record for women at the time.
Bonn announced his retirement after the World Championships in February 2019. This is because the pain in my right knee, which had undergone multiple surgeries, continued every race. However, after undergoing surgery to realign the kneecap in April of this year, the pain disappeared. “I want to share more of my skiing know-how with great female athletes,” said Vonn.
His mother, Linda Crone, also had a great influence on Vaughn’s decision to return. In an interview with the New York Times, Bon said, “I lived with a unique perspective thanks to my mother, who posed challenges big and small every day. I felt a responsibility to live to my fullest potential every day and to live without any regrets. “I felt like I would regret it if I didn’t take on the challenge this time,” he said.
Bonn also left open the possibility of challenging the Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics to be held in 15 months. Vonn participated in the Olympics four times, starting with the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, Turin 2006, Vancouver 2010, and Pyeongchang 2018.
Vonn will join the U.S. ski team training starting on the 16th. Vonn received a wild card that allows Olympic and world championship winners to participate in the competition, and is scheduled to return to action at the World Cup super-G in St. Moritz, Switzerland on the 21st of next month.

How can mentoring from seasoned athletes like Lindsey Vonn impact the development of young female skiers?
Interview: The Comeback of Lindsey Vonn – A Conversation with an Expert
Editor (Time.news): Today, we’re excited to welcome an expert in winter sports and ski dynamics, Dr. Sarah Thompson. With the monumental news of Lindsey Vonn returning to competitive skiing after nearly six years of retirement, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to discuss this remarkable comeback. Welcome, Dr. Thompson!
Dr. Thompson: Thank you! I’m thrilled to be here and talk about Lindsey Vonn’s inspiring return to the slopes.
Editor: To start, Lindsey Vonn is often referred to as the “Ski Queen.” Can you give our audience a sense of her legacy in the skiing world?
Dr. Thompson: Absolutely! Lindsey Vonn is a true icon in alpine skiing. With three Olympic medals, including a gold, and 82 World Cup victories, which was a record at the time, her achievements have forever changed the sport. She’s known for her speed, technical skill, and fierce competitive spirit. Her comeback is sending ripples not just through her fanbase but also the entire skiing community.
Editor: Five years is quite a significant break. How do you think her body will adapt to returning at such a high level?
Dr. Thompson: That’s a great question. It really depends on many factors, including her current physical condition and the dedication of her training regimen leading up to the World Cup. After undergoing surgery to realign her kneecap, Vonn has noted a disappearance of pain, which is vital for her performance. Athletes often have varying experiences with returning after long breaks, especially at a competitive level, so it will be interesting to see how she compensates for the lost time.
Editor: Vonn mentioned her desire to pass on her skiing know-how to aspiring female athletes. Why is mentoring important in sports, especially in a field dominated by intense competition?
Dr. Thompson: Mentorship in sports is incredibly valuable. It not only allows seasoned athletes like Vonn to share insights and experiences but also empowers the next generation of female skiers. Women in sports often face unique challenges, and having role models can inspire young athletes to push through barriers. Vonn’s commitment to this aspect highlights her leadership and dedication to the sport beyond her own competitive career.
Editor: Along with her recent return, Vonn hinted at competing in the upcoming Milan-Cortina d’Ampezzo Winter Olympics. How significant would this be for her, considering she’s participated in four previous Olympics?
Dr. Thompson: It would be monumental. The Olympics represent the pinnacle of an athlete’s career, and for Vonn, returning after such a long hiatus adds layers to her story. Competing in a fifth Olympic Games would not only be a personal triumph but also an inspiring narrative for aspiring athletes. It showcases resilience and the pure love of the sport.
Editor: Vonn’s mother seemed to have a pivotal role in her decision to return. In what ways do you believe familial support influences an athlete’s career, especially in high-pressure environments?
Dr. Thompson: Familial support is crucial, especially for athletes who often face immense pressures and challenges. Having someone who encourages you to pursue your passion—like Vonn’s mother—can be a tremendous motivator. It fosters a sense of accountability and comfort, allowing athletes to take risks and embrace challenges, like Vonn is doing now with her comeback.
Editor: Before we wrap up, what are you most excited about with Lindsey Vonn’s return?
Dr. Thompson: I think I’m most excited to see how she channels her experience, both in technique and mental fortitude, back into competitive skiing. Her story isn’t just about winning; it’s about resilience, passion, and inspiring others. Whether she wins or not, her journey itself will be incredibly inspiring.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Thompson, for your insights into Lindsey Vonn’s incredible return. It’s a remarkable story that transcends sports, and we look forward to watching how this unfolds.
Dr. Thompson: Thank you for having me! I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Lindsey and the skiing community.
