Next Tuesday, November 19, “International Men’s Day” is celebrated and the municipality of the town of Epuyénprovince of Chubut, made a controversial decision: They announced that male employees will have a holiday. This generated rejection through social networks.
This decision arises as a result of ordinance 1299 and Law 26,743 on Gender Identity ordered by the local Executive. Through a statement, they reported that “On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, a holiday has been arranged for all male employees of the Municipality.”
“This measure aims to recognize and celebrate the contribution of men in our society and encourage reflection on issues of men’s health, well-being and gender equality,” the text continues.
he highlights that “it is important to note that this provision applies only to November 19, with the administrative activities of the Municipality maintaining normality.”
Strong criticism of the Municipality on the networks: “What a giant setback!”
The news generated a wave of comments against the Chubut Commune on social networks. The majority questions the ability of the community leader to address gender issues.
«What a giant setback! Gender equality has to do with the recognition of the historical inequalities of women and dissidents and the transformation of the sexual division of labor so that the world is more just and equitable. A thousand steps backwards with this type of actions,” commented a user in response to the publication made by the Municipality on Facebook.
Another argues: “they make ordinances that go against international treaties of a constitutional nature. We could even take it as institutional violence when the statistics account for everything stated in these comments. Shame! “that which they evidently lack.”
«They really should review this decision, Municipality of Epuyén. Shameful, reprehensible,” commented another.
Interview Between Time.news Editor and Gender Studies Expert
Editor: Welcome to Time.news! Today we’re delving into an intriguing and somewhat controversial decision made by the municipality of Epuyén in Chubut province—declaring November 19, International Men’s Day, a holiday for their male employees. With us is Dr. Mariana Castillo, a renowned gender studies expert. Thank you for joining us, Dr. Castillo.
Dr. Castillo: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to discuss such an important topic.
Editor: Let’s get right into it. This decision has caused quite a stir on social media. What are your thoughts on the implications of giving male employees a holiday on International Men’s Day?
Dr. Castillo: It’s certainly a provocative move. While International Men’s Day is intended to celebrate men and raise awareness about issues affecting them, granting a holiday specifically for male employees can be seen as reinforcing traditional gender norms. It raises questions about equality and inclusivity, particularly in a context where gender disparities continue to exist.
Editor: You mentioned traditional gender norms. In what ways does this decision impact the broader conversation around gender identity and equality?
Dr. Castillo: The ordinance is rooted in a recognition of gender identity, as mandated by local laws. However, by officially recognizing a holiday for one gender, it inadvertently sidelines the discussions about the challenges faced by other gender identities. It can make marginalized voices, particularly those of women and non-binary individuals, feel overlooked in a society that aims to achieve true gender parity.
Editor: Social media has been buzzing with reactions—some in favor and others vehemently opposed to the holiday. How do you think public opinion influences policymaking in sensitive areas like gender equality?
Dr. Castillo: Public opinion plays a critical role. Policymakers often respond to the sentiments expressed on social media, which can sometimes amplify extreme views. In this case, those opposing the holiday may feel that it’s an unjust step backward in the fight for gender equality, especially in light of ongoing issues such as workplace discrimination and violence against women. It’s vital for lawmakers to navigate this feedback thoughtfully rather than react impulsively to social media pressure.
Editor: It seems this decision has ignited a broader discussion about how we celebrate gender-specific events. How can we approach these celebrations in a more inclusive manner that promotes equality among all genders?
Dr. Castillo: A more holistic approach would involve celebrating all genders on their respective days while also addressing the underlying issues they face. For example, International Men’s Day could be an opportunity to discuss mental health, societal expectations, and the importance of emotional vulnerability among men. At the same time, it’s crucial to ensure that Women’s Day, Non-Binary Day, and others do not get overshadowed. Promoting discussions that unite rather than divide can lead to more constructive outcomes.
Editor: That’s a great perspective. As we wrap up, what key takeaway should people consider regarding the decision from Epuyén and the implications for gender equality?
Dr. Castillo: The key takeaway is to approach gender issues with nuance and empathy. While creating spaces to celebrate men is important, it should not come at the expense of recognition and support for women and non-binary individuals. Thoughtful policymaking should aim for inclusivity and equality, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued in the conversation.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Castillo, for your insights on this complex issue. It’s clear that the conversation surrounding gender and policy is anything but simple, but it’s incredibly important.
Dr. Castillo: Thank you for having me. I hope this discussion encourages more people to engage thoughtfully with gender issues.
Editor: And thank you to our audience for tuning in. We invite you to share your thoughts on this decision and how we can collectively navigate the conversation surrounding gender equality. Until next time!
