The president-elect of the United States appointed Karoline Leavitt as White House spokesperson, who performed this role in Donald Trump’s campaign and was part of the communications team in the Republican’s first term (2017-2021).
“Karoline Leavitt did an exceptional job as spokesperson for my historic campaign and announced that she will be White House Spokesperson,” Trump said in a statement.
The Republican described Leavitt as “smart and tough”, saying she has “proven to be an extremely effective communicator”.
“I have full confidence that you will stand out and help convey our message to the American people, as we make the United States great again”, he emphasized, repeating the slogan of every presidential campaign (“Make America Great Again”).
When Trump takes office on January 20, 2025, Leavitt, at age 27, will be the youngest White House spokesperson. Before that, the record was held by Ron Ziegler, who was the spokesman for the presidency of Richard Nixon (1969-1974) at the age of 29.
This is one of the most important jobs in the White House because he will be the face of the administration in dealing with journalists.
During his first term, Trump maintained a conflicted relationship with the media, which he called “the enemy of the people” and responsible for “fake news”, after ordering his communications team to end the tradition of daily press conferences.
In the last few days, Donald Trump announced about 20 names that will join his Administration. Among them, Marco Rubio as Secretary of State, Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense and Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security, as well as tycoon Elon Musk to lead a new government efficiency office.
The Republican also appointed Susie Wiles as chief of staff, John Ratcliffe as director of the CIA, Elise Stefanik as ambassador to the UN and, as ‘border czar’, Tom Homan, considered the mastermind behind the controversial policy of separating migrant families on the border with Mexico, in Trump’s first term.
What does Karoline Leavitt’s appointment as White House spokesperson indicate about President Trump’s communication strategy?
Time.news Exclusive Interview:
Editor (Tanya Rodriguez): Good afternoon, and welcome to this special Time.news interview. Today, we have with us Dr. Edward Thornton, a political communication expert and professor at the University of Political Studies. Edward, thank you for joining us.
Dr. Edward Thornton: Thank you for having me, Tanya. It’s a pleasure to be here, especially with such intriguing political developments on the horizon.
Tanya: Just recently, President-elect Donald Trump announced the appointment of Karoline Leavitt as the White House spokesperson. Given her prior experience with Trump’s campaign and the communications team during his first term, what does her appointment signify for his administration?
Dr. Thornton: Leavitt’s appointment signals a return to familiar territory for Trump. She was instrumental during the campaign, and her promotion reflects Trump’s preference for individuals who not only align with his messaging but also have proven loyalty and effectiveness. In many ways, her appointment suggests a continuation of the strategies he implemented previously.
Tanya: Trump described Leavitt as “smart and tough.” How critical do you think these qualities are for someone in her position, particularly in today’s political climate?
Dr. Thornton: Extremely critical. The role of a White House spokesperson is multifaceted; it requires not only a deep understanding of policy but also the ability to handle pressure and navigate challenging media environments. Being ”smart” means she can quickly grasp issues and articulate the administration’s stance, while being “tough” speaks to the resilience needed to fend off criticisms and manage crises effectively.
Tanya: Given that her tenure will likely coincide with a polarized political landscape, what unique challenges do you foresee for Leavitt as she steps into this role?
Dr. Thornton: The immediate challenge will be managing the administration’s narrative and countering opposition rhetoric. The current media landscape is highly charged and often partisan. Leavitt will have to balance being an advocate for the administration while also addressing the concerns of the public and the different factions within the Republican Party. Additionally, reconciling differences between old Trump loyalists and moderates will be crucial.
Tanya: Trump’s choice to elevate a former campaign spokesperson rather than seeking someone with a more traditional background could rekindle discussions about the approach his administration takes in communicating with the public and the media. What are your thoughts on this strategic choice?
Dr. Thornton: It’s a bold move, which reflects Trump’s unconventional style of governance. By choosing someone from his campaign, he reinforces his brand and communicates a sense of continuity. However, it can also lead to challenges if Leavitt is unable to step outside of the campaign narrative and address the broader spectrum of issues that the administration will face. It’s a double-edged sword; she must balance the campaign’s messaging with the realities of governance.
Tanya: what legacy do you believe Leavitt could leave by the end of her tenure? What milestones do you think she should aim for?
Dr. Thornton: Her legacy will depend on her ability to navigate the complexities of her role while maintaining Trump’s core messaging. If she can effectively manage communications during critical moments and foster a more transparent relationship between the White House and the public, she could enhance her reputation significantly. Additionally, fostering a strong and diverse communications team might be one of her greatest achievements, ensuring that multiple voices are heard and represented.
Tanya: Thank you, Dr. Thornton, for your insights on this appointment and the intricacies of political communication. It’ll be fascinating to see how Karoline Leavitt manages her role in this upcoming administration.
Dr. Thornton: Thank you, Tanya. I look forward to sharing more observations as events unfold.
