Interview Between Time.news Editor and Expert on Psychoactive Substance Prevention
Editor: Welcome to Time.news. Today, we have a very special guest, Dr. Ana Rivera, an expert in public health and addiction prevention strategies. Dr. Rivera, thank you for joining us.
Dr. Rivera: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to be here.
Editor: Let’s dive right in. Recently, Tlalpan’s mayor, Gaby Osorio, emphasized the importance of addressing the consumption of psychoactive substances, particularly among young people. What are some key risk factors that communities should be aware of?
Dr. Rivera: That’s a great question! Risk factors can include a variety of elements, such as social environment, family history, mental health issues, and even socio-economic status. Young people are particularly susceptible due to peer pressure, lack of awareness about the consequences of substance use, and sometimes even a lack of supportive relationships. Identifying and addressing these factors is crucial for preventing substance abuse.
Editor: Mayor Osorio also mentioned the importance of strengthening protective measures. What are some effective strategies communities can implement to bolster these protective factors?
Dr. Rivera: Protective factors can include fostering strong community ties, improving family cohesion, and promoting healthy school environments. Programs that provide education on the risks of substance use, along with support systems like counseling and mentorship, can significantly help. Engaging young people in constructive activities, such as sports and arts, also offers them a sense of belonging and purpose, which can deter substance use.
Editor: The Interinstitutional Roundtable led by Mayor Osorio aims to bring together various experts to address these challenges. How vital is collaboration among institutions in tackling substance abuse issues?
Dr. Rivera: Collaboration is absolutely essential. By pooling resources, knowledge, and expertise from different sectors—like education, healthcare, and community services—we can develop comprehensive strategies that are far more effective than isolated efforts. It creates a unified front and ensures that we are using the best practices to protect our youth.
Editor: It sounds like a multi-faceted approach is key. As the conversation about substance use prevention evolves, what trends or shifts are you seeing in how communities are addressing this issue?
Dr. Rivera: There’s definitely a growing recognition of the importance of mental health in relation to substance use. Communities are increasingly focusing on prevention as a holistic endeavor. We’re also seeing a shift from punitive measures to more supportive approaches, such as rehabilitation and education. This is particularly important in advocating for policy changes at the local and national levels.
Editor: That’s encouraging to hear. What advice would you give to local leaders like Mayor Osorio who are looking to make a difference in their communities?
Dr. Rivera: I’d encourage local leaders to actively listen to their community’s needs and prioritize youth involvement in these discussions. Encouraging open dialogue can help dismantle stigmas around substance use and mental health. Investing in preventive education, building supportive networks, and fostering a culture of health can make a substantial impact.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Rivera, for your insightful comments. It’s clear that addressing psychoactive substance consumption requires a coordinated effort that prioritizes education, prevention, and community involvement. We appreciate your time today!
Dr. Rivera: Thank you for having me. It’s been a pleasure to discuss such an important topic!
