The Ukrainian government yesterday (Monday) launched a website in partnership with crypto companies FTX and Everstake that will transfer donations to the Central Bank of Ukraine while it fights the devastating invasion of Russia, the Forbes website reported.

On the Aid for Ukraine website, users can now offer donations in 10 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin, Etherium and Dogecoin. “Cryptocurrencies play a significant role in Ukraine’s defense,” said Alexander Burnyakov, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister for Digital Change, in a statement. “Cryptographic currencies have been shown to be of great value in facilitating the flow of funding to Ukrainian citizens and soldiers and in raising awareness and interest among the global public,” he added.

The cryptocurrency company Everstake, one of the largest in Ukraine, will allow users to donate in cryptocurrencies other than those listed on the site. The site also plans to add the ability to donate tokens (NFT) in the future.

The Bahamas FTX-based exchange platform, set up by US billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried, will convert the funds donated into dollars and route them to the National Bank of Ukraine. The Ukrainian cryptocurrency exchange platform Kuna is also part of the initiative.

At the Aid for Ukraine website, nearly $ 49 million was raised out of a $ 200 million target. The money will be used to support the Ukrainian army as well as citizens “who are in dire need of humanitarian aid,” the partnership said in a statement.

At the end of last February, the Ukrainian government uploaded to its official Twitter account a number of requests for surfers to send to the country donations in cryptocurrencies. The first tweets on the subject have been deleted, but the last one is still there, declaring: “Stand by the people of Ukraine. Now accept donations in crypto. Bitcoin, Etherium and USDT”. Below this message are the addresses of the Bitcoin wallet and the Etherium wallet

This tweet received more than 40,000 shares and about 217,000 likes, and masses of surfers rushed to contribute. This, although it was not clear at first whether it was a real tweet or a cyber attack – it is known that Russia attacked Ukraine with hackers even before the ground invasion, and that one of the favorite methods for hackers to have fun with high profile victims is to send their Twitter followers crypto coins. The wallet to which the coins are sent is actually under the control of the burglars.

In this case, too, one of the Ethereum developers, Vitalik Butrin, was quick to warn not to send donations to published addresses, noting that “there have been many hacks alongside this invasion. It could be a breach. This information environment is as hostile as it can be. Be extremely vigilant.” However, he later reiterated it: “Gets credentials from several sources that this is true. Deletes my warning for now – but be careful, and always drive slowly and carefully before making non-cancellable crypto transfers.” In addition, Ukraine’s digital transformation ministry has confirmed to crypto news site The Block that the tweets are real.
