18th KBS President Candidate Park Jang-beom’s personnel hearing
Park Jang-beom, candidate for KBS president, answered a question about whether he was selected as a candidate for the president position thanks to the interview broadcast with President Yoon Seok-yeol.
On this day, People Power Party lawmaker Choi Soo-jin said, “In a conversation with the president last February, you described the Dior handbag as a pouch, a small bag from a foreign company, but the official name is Lady Dior Chain Pouch,” and asked, “Did you refer to the website?”
Candidate Park responded, “I checked the product name on the Dior website by comparing it with the receipt in the first Voice of Seoul report.”
Candidate Park then added, “I never expected the controversy” about referring to the ‘Dior bag’ as a ‘pouch’ and a ‘small bag.’
Rep. Choi said to Candidate Park, ”‘Didn’t you reveal your political stance during the presidential interview?’ “Some people say, ‘Isn’t that why you came to this place?’ What do you think?” he asked.
Candidate Park said, “I don’t agree,” and emphasized, “I think you can’t become the president of KBS just because of one program, and I think the board of directors evaluated the candidate’s qualifications and voted on him.”
Park Jang-beom, candidate for the 27th KBS president, born in 1970, graduated from Yonsei University’s Department of Economics. He joined KBS as a reporter for the 20th class in 1994 and has been the anchor of ‘KBS News 9’ since November 2023. In February of this year, he also appeared as the host of ‘KBS Special Talk to the President’s Office’, a conversation broadcast with President Yoon Seok-yeol, which was held in place of the President’s New Year’s press conference. If appointed by the president after a National Assembly personnel hearing, he will become the first 9 o’clock news anchor-turned-president of KBS. The term of office is three years, from December 10 of this year to December 9, 2027.

How might Park Jang-beom’s background as a former news anchor influence his leadership at KBS?
Interview Between Time.news Editor and Broadcasting Expert on KBS Presidential Candidate Park Jang-beom
Editor: Good day, everyone! Today, we have an engaging discussion lined up on the recent personnel hearing of Park Jang-beom, the candidate for the presidency of the Korea Broadcasting Corporation (KBS). Joining us is Dr. Kim Ae-young, a renowned expert in broadcasting and media relations. Welcome, Dr. Kim!
Dr. Kim: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to be here.
Editor: Park Jang-beom recently faced some tough questions during his hearing, particularly regarding comments he made during an interview with President Yoon Seok-yeol. What are your thoughts on the implications of that interview on his candidacy?
Dr. Kim: Well, the interview undoubtedly set off a wave of scrutiny. The fact that some lawmakers believe his appointment is tied to that interview suggests a concern about political influence over KBS, which is supposed to be an independent public broadcaster. It raises questions about the balance between government relationships and journalistic integrity.
Editor: Absolutely. One notable moment was when lawmaker Choi Soo-jin questioned him about misnaming a Dior handbag during that interview. Park stated he compared the name with information from the Dior website. Do you think this is just a minor detail or does it reflect something larger about his candidacy?
Dr. Kim: On the surface, it might seem petty. However, it symbolizes how any perceived misstep can be leveraged to question one’s competence. In the realm of broadcasting and public perception, image matters. This incident could signal to viewers that, if confirmed, Park needs to ensure every detail aligns with public scrutiny—not just in terms of broadcasting but also personal branding.
Editor: That’s a great point. Park also defended himself against the notion that he revealed a political stance during his presidential interview. He emphasized that his qualifications were evaluated independently by the board. How do you interpret this response?
Dr. Kim: Park’s response is telling; he is positioned as a professional rather than a political appointee. In the past, KBS has seen leaders come in with political baggage, and he seems aware of this history. His insistence on merit-based evaluation could resonate well with the public, who are looking for professionalism in such an integral institution.
Editor: It seems he is keen to distance himself from those potentially detrimental associations. Now, considering his unique background as a former news anchor, do you expect this will influence his leadership style if appointed?
Dr. Kim: Very much so. Being a recognized face from KBS News 9 likely gives him an understanding of what viewers expect from their news service. His experiences can foster a more empathetic approach to leadership, one that values transparency and accountability, especially in an age where public trust in media is critical.
Editor: And as he would be the first KBS president to come directly from a news anchoring position, how do you think that historic aspect will affect his presidency?
Dr. Kim: It could potentially reshape KBS’s narrative. If he succeeds in this role, it may open doors for more personnel from the field to take on leadership positions. However, success will hinge upon his ability to manage not only the political challenges of the role but also to honor the journalistic values that KBS stands for.
Editor: Fascinating insights, Dr. Kim. Thank you for shedding light on these critical issues surrounding Park Jang-beom’s candidacy. It will undoubtedly be interesting to see how this unfolds in the coming weeks.
Dr. Kim: Thank you for having me. I’m looking forward to observing the developments as well!
Editor: And thank you to our audience for tuning in. Please join us next time for more discussions on current events and their impact on our society.
