How does the new cloud streaming feature on PlayStation Portal compare to other gaming streaming services?
Interview with Yevgeny Fedunenko on the New PlayStation Portal Streaming Features
Editor: Thank you for joining us today, Yevgeny. Sony’s recent update to the PlayStation Portal has raised some significant questions and excitement in the gaming community. Can you explain what this update entails?
Yevgeny Fedunenko: Absolutely! Sony has introduced a feature allowing the PlayStation Portal to support game streaming from the cloud. Previously, this device could only play games through a direct connection to a PlayStation 5 over Wi-Fi. Now, with the new update, subscribers to PlayStation Plus Premium can stream games from the PlayStation Plus catalogue. This is a big step towards more flexible gaming options.
Editor: It sounds like a game-changer. Who can access these new features, and what are the requirements for gamers?
Yevgeny Fedunenko: The feature is currently available in beta for PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, which costs $18 per month. At the moment, it is accessible to residents in select countries, including the United States, Germany, Great Britain, France, and Italy. This targeted rollout suggests that Sony is taking a cautious approach to ensure the feature performs well before broader availability.
Editor: Could you elaborate on the technical specifications for streaming? What should gamers be aware of when it comes to internet requirements and game quality?
Yevgeny Fedunenko: Certainly! Players will need an internet speed of at least 7 Mbps for streaming at 720p resolution. If they want to enjoy games at 1080p, a faster connection of 13 Mbps is required. It’s also important to note that there are limitations regarding features; for instance, users won’t be able to access trial versions of games, utilize 3D audio, or engage in voice chat during gameplay.
Editor: That’s interesting. Given these limitations, which games or categories are available for streaming?
Yevgeny Fedunenko: Currently, the game catalogue available for streaming is exclusively from the PlayStation 5. Unfortunately, titles from older consoles, such as PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, are not supported. This emphasis on newer titles aligns with Sony’s strategy to encourage the adoption of the latest hardware and software.
Editor: What are the implications of this update for the gaming industry as a whole? How do you see it affecting players and the broader gaming landscape?
Yevgeny Fedunenko: This development could indeed shift how players interact with games. By offering cloud streaming, Sony is reducing the barriers to access high-quality games, which can potentially draw in more casual gamers. It may also encourage competition in the gaming industry as other platforms look to match or improve upon Sony’s offerings. Furthermore, it signals a significant move towards cloud gaming, a trend many industry experts have anticipated.
Editor: For our readers who may be considering subscribing to PlayStation Plus Premium, what practical advice would you give them?
Yevgeny Fedunenko: I would suggest ensuring you have a robust internet connection before diving in, as streaming performance heavily relies on bandwidth. Moreover, you should review the catalogue of available games to see if it aligns with your gaming preferences. Since this feature is currently in beta, I would also recommend staying updated on any changes or improvements Sony may implement based on user feedback.
Editor: Thank you, Yevgeny, for sharing your insights about the new PlayStation Portal features and the implications for gamers and the industry.
Yevgeny Fedunenko: It’s my pleasure! I’m excited to see how this feature evolves and impacts the gaming community.
