How can municipalities address the challenges faced by expired youth councils?
Interview Between Time.news Editor and Youth Engagement Expert
Editor: Good day, and welcome to Time.news. Today, we’re delving into an important topic that touches on the future of democracy — youth participation at the local level. I’m joined by an expert in youth engagement and local governance, Dr. Layla Ahmed. Thank you for being with us, Dr. Ahmed.
Dr. Ahmed: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to discuss such a crucial issue.
Editor: Recently, the Minister of Youth, Fathallah Al-Zoni, convened a meeting to address youth councils in municipalities and enhance youth participation in the electoral process. Why is it vital to involve young people in local decision-making?
Dr. Ahmed: Involving young people in local decision-making is essential for a number of reasons. Firstly, they represent a significant portion of the population, and their perspectives can lead to more comprehensive and relevant policies. Engaging youth ensures that their needs and aspirations are considered, which in turn fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility towards their communities.
Editor: That’s a compelling argument. The meeting also discussed municipalities where youth council legal terms have expired, such as Sabratha and Al-Jameel. What challenges do these municipalities face in revitalizing their youth councils?
Dr. Ahmed: The main challenges include ensuring awareness about the importance of these councils, overcoming political apathy among young people, and providing the necessary infrastructure and resources for elections to occur. Additionally, the lack of training and support for young candidates can deter participation, making it crucial to implement robust capacity-building initiatives.
Editor: Absolutely. There was also mention of the first-time elections in municipalities like Qurayyat and Mizdah. How can these municipalities prepare effectively for these elections?
Dr. Ahmed: Preparation is key. Municipalities should start by promoting awareness campaigns to educate young people about the electoral process. Establishing clear procedures for nominations and encouraging local civic organizations to support potential candidates can also help. Furthermore, providing forums for discussion can engage the youth and allow them to voice their concerns and expectations.
Editor: It seems communication is key. During the meeting, Minister Al-Zoni emphasized coordination with local committees. How does collaboration enhance the electoral process for youth councils?
Dr. Ahmed: Collaboration with local committees can create a support network for young candidates and voters. It ensures that the electoral process is inclusive and considers the unique characteristics of each municipality. Moreover, these collaborations can help mobilize resources, provide platforms for debate, and create a safe space for young people to express their views.
Editor: It’s fascinating how interconnected these elements are. As we look ahead, what do you envision as the long-term benefits of encouraging youth participation in local governance?
Dr. Ahmed: Long-term, increased youth participation can lead to more democratic, equitable, and effective governance. It encourages civic engagement and helps develop future leaders who are well-versed in local issues. Ultimately, it can stimulate economic growth and social cohesion as young people become active contributors to their communities.
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Ahmed. Your insights on youth engagement in local governance highlight the importance of fostering a culture of participation among young people. We appreciate your time and expertise.
Dr. Ahmed: Thank you for this conversation. I hope it inspires more action towards engaging our youth in the decision-making processes that shape their lives.
