Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the label’s birth… First album to be released in January next year
“I have been fascinated by Maurice Ravel since my days at the Paris Conservatory.”
Pianist Cho Seong-jin releases an album containing works by French composer Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) through Deutsche Grammophon. Deutsche Grammophon is a famous German classical record label founded in 1898.
According to Universal Music on the 22nd, Seong-Jin Cho recorded all of Ravel’s piano solos and two piano concertos to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Ravel’s birth.
The first of the two albums recorded this time, ‘Label: Complete Piano Solo Songs’, will be released digitally and on two CDs on January 17th next year. The second album, which includes two piano concertos, will be released on February 21st, and a deluxe edition containing all tracks will be released on April 11th.
Prior to this, some of the included songs will be released in advance through download and online streaming services. You can first enjoy ‘Couperin’s Tomb’ on the 22nd, ‘Sonatine’ on December 13th, and part of ‘In the Style of Chabrier’ on January 3rd next year.
Cho Seong-jin is said to have fallen in love with Ravel when he was a student at the Paris Conservatory. Regarding the release of this album, he said, “The variety of ideas, colors, and emotions that can be found in Ravel’s music always fascinates me,” and “This is the first time I have performed or recorded all of a composer’s songs, and I am able to understand Ravel much more deeply than before.” “It’s done,” he said.
In addition to releasing the album, Seong-Jin Cho plans to hold a concert commemorating the 150th anniversary of the label’s birth.
Starting with a recital at the Konzerthaus in Vienna, Austria, on January 25th next year, the concert tour of the United States will include performances at Carnegie Hall and Walt Disney Concert Hall in February and March. In April and May, he will perform recitals at leading concert halls in Europe and Germany, including the Barbican Center in London and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg. At the Berlin Philharmonic in Germany, the Berliner Philharmoniker’s resident musician will continue to perform. Afterwards, schedules are scheduled for Asia and the United States until the summer.

In addition to the album, Cho will be embarking on a concert tour that includes a recital in Vienna on January 25, 2024, followed by performances at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in February and March. The tour will continue throughout Europe and Asia into the summer.
