Yesterday the Mariinsky Theater and the ballet lovers of St. Petersburg said goodbye to Vladimir Shklyarov, who passed away on November 16th. As MK learned, the farewell and funeral were scheduled for November 20, but the artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev asked to be postponed to the 21st, since he could not be in the city on the 20th.
Farewell and civil funeral service took place in the Mariinsky-2 building.
The queue of those who came to greet their idol was huge: from the main entrance to the old theater building it stretched across the bridge of the Kryukov canal to the Mariinsky-2. Many had to stand for at least an hour and a half to get to the funeral service. Almost the entire ballet company gathered to greet Shklyarov. The funeral service was opened by Valery Gergiev and closed by the son of the general director of the Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky – Boris. The talented artist was buried in the Smolensk cemetery, where all members of the Mariinsky Theater are now buried.
