Idukki: Serious security breach at Mullaperiyar Dam. Four persons, including retired SIs and officials of the Tamil Nadu Irrigation Department, visited the Mullaperiyar Dam last Sunday. The police did not stop the four persons who reached the boat from Tamil Nadu. The police also refused to register the names of the visitors in the GD register. Following the controversy, the police registered a case against the four.

The lifespan suggested by the engineers at the time of construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam was 50 years. But now more than twice as many years have passed. Therefore, an expert team should be appointed to determine the duration of the dam. If Mullaperiyar collapses, the other four dams below will collapse and the water will reach the Arabian Sea within an hour. It is estimated to be 180 times more powerful than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and could threaten the lives of tens of thousands of people in the lowlands. It has also demanded that the water level be lowered to 130 feet during monsoons. The party is joining the case filed by the Save Kerala Brigade led by Adv Russell Joy seeking decommissioning of the dam.
