Idukki MP Dean Kuriakose has filed an application in the Supreme Court to join the party in the Mullaperiyar case. The petition was filed before the cases are due to be heard next week. The lifespan suggested by the engineers at the time of construction of the Mullaperiyar Dam was 50 years. But now more than twice as many years have passed. Therefore, an expert team should be appointed to determine the duration of the dam. If Mullaperiyar collapses, the other four dams below will collapse and the water will reach the Arabian Sea within an hour. It is estimated to be 180 times more powerful than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, and could threaten the lives of tens of thousands of people in the lowlands. It has also demanded that the water level be lowered to 130 feet during monsoons. The party is joining the case filed by the Save Kerala Brigade led by Adv Russell Joy seeking decommissioning of the dam.
