Time.news Editor (TNE): Welcome, Mayor Fernando Mercado. Thank you for joining us today to discuss the important initiatives you’ve launched in Magdalena Contreras regarding gender violence.
Fernando Mercado (FM): Thank you for having me. I’m excited to share our efforts to combat gender violence in our community.
TNE: Let’s start with the Specialized Protocol for Attention to Gender Violence that you presented. What motivated you to create this unprecedented protocol for your administration’s workers?
FM: The motivation stemmed from the urgent need to address and prevent violence against women, especially in the workplace. We recognized that many public servants may face such issues and often lack the support or knowledge on how to report them. This protocol aims to create a safe environment where they feel empowered to come forward.
TNE: That’s crucial. Can you walk us through the main steps of this protocol?
FM: Absolutely. The protocol consists of five key steps:
- Reception of the complaint with a gender-sensitive approach.
- Application of protection measures through our Ethics Committee.
- Notification to both the victim and the alleged perpetrator.
- Investigation by the Gender Commission, which evaluates the case.
- Issuance of recommendations to the Internal Control Body, ensuring transparency in the process.
TNE: It sounds comprehensive. How did the public servants in your administration respond to this presentation?
FM: Hundreds of women attended the presentation, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. They expressed relief that the administration is taking concrete steps to address these issues, and they appreciated the transparency and clarity of the protocol.
TNE: Alongside the protocol, you’ve also organized activities for the 16 days of activism against gender violence. What programs do you have planned?
FM: We have an exciting and comprehensive program lined up! It includes workshops, health days, talks, and even athletic races and passive walks. All these activities focus on key themes such as violence prevention, health services, education on equality, and legal tools available to women for their safety.
TNE: These initiatives are vital for community engagement. How do you plan to measure the success of these programs and the effectiveness of the protocol?
FM: We will monitor the number of complaints filed, the outcomes of investigations, and the feedback from the participants in our community programs. Additionally, we will conduct surveys to assess the perceptions and experiences of women in the workplace regarding safety and support.
TNE: That sounds like a thorough approach. Lastly, how can the residents of Magdalena Contreras further support these initiatives?
FM: Community involvement is essential. I encourage residents to participate in our activism events, provide feedback, and spread awareness about the resources available for those affected by gender violence. It’s a collective effort, and we all have a role to play in creating a safe environment for everyone.
