In the SD Logronesthe team for which he goes out of his way, everyone knows him as ‘the grandfather’, but Jesus Martinez Bujanda, despite his age, 81 years old and on his way to 82, he has no grandchildren. She is, her wife and three children, who enjoy seeing her father happy every weekend, one of the most beloved people and a fundamental piece in the gear of this club. “For everyone in this club I am the grandfather when in reality I still don’t have grandchildren at home,” says the props of the La Rioja team. Former furniture delivery man, the truck is part of the past because now he has balls, uniforms and high-heeled boots as the epicenter of his life.
Also to his family, who help him and lend him a hand to have everything ready and prepared in the dressing room of the rojiblanco team.
As if it was just starting Jesus Martinez (Logroño, September 20, 1940) every weekend he continues to feel a special tingling in his stomach when he plays his SD Logronesclub of the RFEF First Division. “I like this category a lot because it includes all the sauce of football,” says the veteran kit man in a video published by the Federation on its official channels.
The SD Logrones is the second family for Jesus Martinez, who in the La Rioja club breathes the aroma of old football in the company of his children and wife. His son Chuchi helps him with the tasks of organizing the material, his two daughters with office tasks on game days and even his wife throws herself into sewing the occasional shirt because “this is our team and if we have to lend a hand, it is thrown”, affirms the veteran prop man proudly. A character loved by managers, players and also fans of this entity.
When others only enjoy football from the living room of their house or in the stands of the stadium, Jesús continues day after day unattainable to discouragement “because there is no similar feeling to living the matches at field level and from the bench next to the players.” With that eternally youthful spiritJesus is one of the great values of SD Logroñés.
The presence of elderly props is not, however, a novelty in soccer teams of the lower categories. In 2019, Manuel Pérez Vázquez «Nene» put an end to more than three decades at the service of San Fernando CD, a group from Cádiz that is currently also a member of the First RFEF.
“Nene” set foot in the Cadiz team’s locker room for the first time in the 1982-83 season and since then, on time every Sunday, he did not miss a game until his retirement, in November 2019, at the age of 86. An endearing character who is part of the living history of island football over the last three decades.
