The Golden Gate Bridge is the symbol of San Francisco and arguably the most photographed bridge in the world. Building it over the open sea in the middle of an earthquake area was a big risk in 1937. Will the Millau Viaduct in southern France one day be similarly famous? Michel Virlogeux and Sir Norman Foster’s spectacular bridge is taller than the Eiffel Tower and longer than the Champs-Elysées. But so far, she has been denied fame that extends beyond the country’s borders.
