Liverpool had to dig unexpectedly deep, but they secured three new points as they defeated Southampton 3-2 at St. Mary’s on Sunday.
Mohammed Salah scored two of Liverpool’s goals and turned the match from 2-1 to 2-3 for the visitors from Merseyside.
Comedy Night
Half an hour had been played when a risky pass from Southampton keeper Alex McCarthy led to a disastrous clearance attempt by Flynn Downes.
The ball went straight to Dominik Szoboszlai, who curled it into the corner with his left foot, hitting the post on the way in.
Just minutes before halftime, the home team struck back with a penalty kick after Tyler Dibling was fouled by Andy Robertson just outside the penalty area.
VAR was consulted to determine if the foul occurred outside the box, but concluded that the decision should stand.
Adam Armstrong’s penalty was initially saved by Caoimhin Kelleher, but he was in the right place to score from the rebound.
Salah Show
At the start of the second half, Southampton took the lead after a masterful counterattack, where Adam Armstrong eventually found Mateus Fernandes, who placed the ball in the corner behind Kelleher.
Just under halfway through the second half, however, it was another comedy night in Southampton’s defense.
A long ball from Ryan Gravenberch was misjudged by keeper McCarthy, leaving him completely outplayed as Mohamed Salah touched the ball past him and straight into the net.
Ten minutes before the end, it was Liverpool’s turn to be awarded a penalty when the ball hit Yukinara Sugawara’s arm inside the box.
Mohammed Salah was as reliable as ever from the penalty spot, sending Liverpool into a 3-2 lead.
