Lionel Messi (Inter Miami) and Javier Mascherano, who played together for the Argentina national soccer team and FC Barcelona (Spain), have now formed a ‘priestly bond.’
Major League Soccer (MLS) Inter Miami announced on the 27th (Korean time) that it had appointed manager Mascherano through the club’s website. Coach Mascherano’s contract period is three years until 2027.
Inter Miami had a vacant head coach as coach Gerardo Martino resigned for personal reasons, and Mascherano was given the baton.
Coach Mascherano is a legend in Argentine soccer, and he performed outstandingly as a defensive midfielder and central defender.
In particular, while playing for Barcelona from 2010 to 2018, he won a total of 19 trophies, including winning the UEFA Champions League (UCL) twice (2010-11 and 2014-15 seasons) with Messi.
As a member of the Argentina national soccer team, he won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and finished second at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
Coach Mascherano will manage former teammates such as Messi, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba at Inter Miami.
Coach Mascherano, who retired from active duty in 2020, took the path of a leader and led the Argentina under-20 (U20) and under-23 (U23) national teams. They did not achieve significant results, only reaching the round of 16 of the 2021 FIFA U20 World Cup and the quarterfinals of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Coach Mascherano, who is seeking a rebound at Inter Miami, said, “It is an honor to lead a team like Inter Miami. “I was attracted to the club’s ambition and the infrastructure to support it,” he said, adding, “I will do my best to help the team leap to new heights.”
