She has the freshness, innocence and enthusiasm of a 17-year-old girl. For several weeks, Kai Trump has been delighting Internet users by sharing selected moments from his extraordinary life on his YouTube channel. On Tuesday, the granddaughter of Donald Trump released a video behind the launch of the SpaceX Starship rocket, which took place on November 19 in Texas. In this short film of about ten minutes, the 17-year-old teenager chose to portray a conversation between her grandfather and Elon Musk.
As a reminder, that day, SpaceX had to give up trying to capture the first stage of Starship with mechanical weapons. A complex maneuver that she nevertheless succeeded in October. This time, Elon Musk’s company announced shortly after takeoff that the criteria were not met to undertake this operation, and Super Heavy landed in the Gulf of Mexico where it broke up. The rocket must eventually be fully reusable, which is why SpaceX is trying to come up with its first stage.
Kai Trump revealed the moments after this failure, when Elon Musk will be with Donald Trump (editor’s note, from 7:10 in the video). “We had some concerns about the tower, so we ended it,” says the richest man of all time. The president-elect doesn’t seem to fully understand what his interlocutor has said: “Excellent,” he marveled. He then asks, “Can they reuse it? Can they get it out of the sea?
Elon Musk then seems to try to politely respond: “Um… it’s going to… it’s probably going to explode. That’s my opinion.” As Kai Trump’s vlog shows, his grandfather was not very talkative during this address. Last week, a body language specialist explained to «telegraph» that Donald Trump was “very uncomfortable” that day. “He usually plays the alpha male, the most powerful person in the room,” he explained, adding that the Republican seemed “under siege,” “anxious,” and ”didn’t know what what you do with your hands.

Joëlle Mermoud (Editor): Welcome, Kai! It’s wonderful to have you here today. Your latest YouTube video showcasing your grandfather, Donald Trump, and Elon Musk has certainly created quite a buzz. What inspired you to film that particular interaction between them during the SpaceX launch?
Kai Trump: Thank you for having me, Joëlle! I’ve always been fascinated by space exploration and technology. When I was at the SpaceX Starship launch, I saw my grandfather chatting with Elon Musk, and I felt it was a unique moment to capture. It’s not every day you see two influential figures discussing aspirations for the future of space travel!
Joëlle: Absolutely! That blend of politics and cutting-edge technology is captivating. How did you feel about showcasing that moment to your audience, reflecting both your family legacy and the world of innovation?
Kai: Honestly, it was exciting! I love sharing my experiences, especially moments that highlight my grandfather’s involvement in significant events. I think it’s important for my generation to see how these figures interact and the conversations they have about the future. It makes them more relatable.
Joëlle: Indeed, and your YouTube channel presents those experiences through the lens of a 17-year-old, which adds a fresh perspective. Have you had any surprising reactions or feedback from viewers since posting the video?
Kai: Definitely! Some people loved seeing the lighter side of my grandfather in such a casual setting. Others found the exchange between him and Elon to be quite thought-provoking. But I think the most common reaction was curiosity about the dynamics between them – it seems to spark a lot of interest in both their personalities!
Joëlle: That’s great to hear! Now, given your family’s visibility in both social and political arenas, how do you navigate the line between personal moments and the public’s perception?
Kai: That’s a good question. It can be tricky at times! I try to focus on the positive moments and share my genuine experiences. I want my audience to see that, despite the public image, my grandfather is a family man passionate about the future. I think it’s okay to show that side while also being aware of the wider implications.
Joëlle: A wise approach indeed. Looking ahead, do you have any plans for future videos or themes you want to explore on your channel?
Kai: I do! I’m interested in creating content that dives deeper into topics like technology and sustainability, especially how young people can get involved. I want to highlight young innovators and push for more discussions around the future – both environmentally and technologically.
Joëlle: That sounds promising, and I’m sure your audience will appreciate that focus! Before we wrap up, what advice would you give to other young creators looking to share their unique perspectives like you do?
Kai: Don’t be afraid to be yourself! Your story is valuable and unique, and there’s an audience out there for it. Stay true to your passions and interests; authenticity resonates more than anything else. And most importantly, have fun with it!
