Spanish coach Mikel Arteta called on his English team, Arsenal, to prove itself during the confrontation against its Portuguese host Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday in the Champions League.
Arsenal failed to score or win in their last four away matches in the Champions League.
Arteta believes that Sporting’s 4-1 victory over Manchester City earlier this month proves that he belongs to the elite clubs.
Arteta said in a press conference: “We definitely have to improve. I think we took the right steps given the control we showed against Inter Milan, the dominant team in the Italian League, which reached the Champions League final and should have won the title, but in reality we had to go out.” With a positive result, but we did not.”
He added: “Taking these steps is what we should do later, and be effective in the opponent’s penalty area, and do what is necessary to score the three points.”
Arteta praised the Sporting team, saying: “Their journey is amazing. This shows that it is not only about competence, but about preparation and ambition. It is something about the team’s energy that they possess.”
He concluded by saying, “We have a tremendous challenge. Coming here and showing our capabilities against this type of competitor, to appear in our usual form and achieve victory.”

Mikel Arteta, Expert Coach: Thank you for having me. This match is crucial for us. We’ve struggled with our away form, failing to score or win in our last four Champions League matches. That needs to change, and we’re focused on proving ourselves against a competitive team like Sporting Lisbon.
Editor: You mentioned Arsenal’s previous performances. How important is it for the team to convert their home form into success on the road?
Mikel Arteta: Absolutely vital. We have shown that we can compete at a high level at home, but the true test is performing consistently away. Sporting Lisbon’s recent 4-1 victory over Manchester City highlights their capability to challenge elite teams. We need to take that step and ensure our performance aligns with our ambitions.
Editor: Speaking of Sporting Lisbon, what do you think makes them a formidable opponent?
Mikel Arteta: Their journey in recent years is impressive. It’s not just about individual talent; it’s about the team’s preparation, ambition, and energy. They have shown they can beat top teams, and that demands our utmost respect and readiness.
Editor: You’ve emphasized improvement and effective communication in the penalty area. What practical steps will your team take to achieve those goals?
Mikel Arteta: We need to maintain control of the match, like we did against Inter Milan, but with a sharper focus on finishing. We’re working on our movement in the opponent’s box and being proactive rather than reactive. It’s about being effective and executing our plans flawlessly to secure the three points.
Editor: As you prepare for this match, how do you balance confidence and caution in your team’s mindset?
Mikel Arteta: It’s a delicate balance. Confidence comes from preparation and understanding our capabilities. However, caution is equally important, especially against teams that can capitalize on any mistakes. We must respect the opposition while also believing in our strengths.
