Of Gabriele Bojano

After six years of waiting, the Historical Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics returns to Amalfi. Mayor Daniele Milano has made official the date of the sixty-sixth edition of the historical re-enactment sporting event, born under the high patronage of the President of the Italian Republic: the challenge between Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice will take place on Sunday 5 June. Amalfi is already at work for the construction of extraordinary days that will culminate with the competition of the galleons. Meetings, collateral events and dedicated happenings are being studied which, in the shadow of the majestic bell tower of the Duomo, will strengthen the authenticity of an “immortal” event between history and sport, tradition and culture.

Synthesis between past and future

We have a history to preserve and defend – says the mayor of Milan – the sporting competition will be the culmination of a series of traditional and new events, a perfect synthesis between past and future that will underline the identity of the Ancient Maritime Republics, regardless of rowing prize. After six years of waiting, we are happy to return to welcome the regatta and the impressive historical processions of our four cities with a glorious past. News in sight, therefore, which will accompany the canonical appointment in the water, and whose contours will be known in the coming weeks. The 2021 edition was won by Genoa while the last time that Amalfi won the sports competition was in 2018. The Maritime Republic of Venice boasts the highest number of trophies won: thirty-four.
