Chemnitz (dpa / sn) – The Chemnitz zoo is richer by a rare specimen. The city administration announced on Monday that three chicks hatched among the Vietnam pheasants at the beginning of June. The boys would be cared for by both parents. As with most pheasant species, there is a clear difference between males and females. While the hen is mostly simply brown in color, the rooster attracts attention with its bright blue plumage, it was said: “The young animals initially wear the simple plumage of their mother for camouflage purposes, but change color when they are around one year old.”

According to the Chemnitz Zoo, it is now assumed that the Vietnam pheasant has become extinct in the wild. Since 2018 there has been no more reliable data on the inventory, but even then the numbers were falling sharply. The main reason is the destruction of the habitat of these animals, but also the hunt for them. Chemnitz Zoo participates in the European conservation breeding program and also arranges animals for reintroduction.
