29 November marks the 100th anniversary of the death of composer Giacomo Puccini. in a three-part series, Nick Sternitzke takes his own look at moments big and small in Puccini’s biography. After saying goodbye to the jealousy thriller and drama in the previous two episodes, this time it’s about comedy.
family members unknown
Giacomo Puccini almost burned his tongue on his coffee. The visit he made this morning at 9 am to the villa in Torre del Lago is strange. In the salon in front of him sit two cousins and their wives. Second, perhaps third degree relatives. In any case, they are complete strangers to Puccini – which is nothing unusual in this extended family.
Would Puccini be willing to let a small part of his fortune – now that he is such a successful composer – go back into the family? That would show him in an excellent light. Puccini throws away the trick of hot coffee that runs uncontrollably from the corner of his mouth with his napkin. “No,” he thinks. He doesn’t even know the “cousins.”
Distant relatives visited Puccini at his villa to share his fortune.

Puccini’s success encourages greed among relatives
Puccini’s family would increase in his growing years. Cousins, illegitimate nephews and sisters-in-law would follow the call of fortune like moths to a flame. His opera “La Bohéme” was a commercial success. puccini had not onyl staged a profitable love tragedy with her, but also dealt with a chapter of his life.
He was sometimes so cold that, like Rodolfo in the opera, he burned manuscripts of his first attempts at composition to keep himself warm.
A scene from Puccini’s opera “La Bohéme”, in which the poet Rodolfo sacrifices one of his manuscripts to at least briefly light a warming fire.
A tax officer cannot be dismissed
Of all things, a story about poor bohemians brought huge amounts of royalties into the composer’s account. As then, not a month has passed without a relative staying in Torre del Lago to inquire about the composer’s health - not without self-interest.
Puccini is able to get rid of the ”cousins” that morning – but not the tax official, who suddenly arrives at the door in the evening. He has reason to believe that Puccini withheld a large portion of his royalties from the authorities. Puccini will invite the official to a private hunt and will move the bureaucratic mind with his devilish charm.

Interview between Time.news Editor and musicology Expert Dr.Emilia Rossi on the Legacy of Giacomo Puccini
Time.news Editor: Welcome, Dr. Rossi! As we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Giacomo Puccini’s death, your insights into his life and legacy are particularly valuable. Let’s start by talking about Puccini’s complex family dynamics, which you explored in your recent writing for us.
Dr.Emilia Rossi: Thank you for having me! Puccini’s family situation is interesting and somewhat tumultuous, reflecting a mix of artistic genius and personal estrangement. the anecdote of his awkward coffee meeting with distant cousins highlights how disconnected he felt from his family, despite their shared bloodline.
Editor: Yes, it’s striking. The article mentions Puccini almost burning his tongue on his coffee while he sat with these cousins he hardly knew. What do you think this incident reveals about him as a person?
Dr. Rossi: It’s a vivid illustration of his isolation. Even though he achieved tremendous success, there was a lingering sentiment of loneliness. The expectation that he might share his wealth with relatives he barely recognized adds pressure and perhaps resentment. It reflects a man caught between his fame and his familial obligations, leading us to ponder how much of himself he was willing to give to them.
Editor: Absolutely. Puccini’s biographical moments range widely, from drama to comedy. In a time where he was surrounded by personal challenges, how did he manage to express humor in his work?
Dr. Rossi: Puccini had a unique ability to weave humor into his operas, often using satire to comment on society and human nature.Even in serious works, moments of levity exist which reveal his depth of understanding of life’s complexities. The transition from the emotional intensity of works like “Tosca” to the comedic elements seen in pieces like “Gianni Schicchi” indicates his versatility as a composer and his ability to engage with diverse human experiences.
Editor: Speaking of “Gianni Schicchi,” many regard it as his comedic masterpiece. What do you think makes it distinct in Puccini’s oeuvre?
Dr. Rossi: “Gianni Schicchi” is remarkable for its lively characters and witty dialogue. Unlike his more tragic operas, it presents a playful perspective on greed and cleverness. Puccini’s clever orchestration and mastery of comedic timing allow audiences to enjoy the absurdities of life while still delivering a meaningful message. It’s a delightful contrast to the heavier themes he frequently enough tackled.
Editor: Moving back to the topic of legacy, how do you see Puccini’s influence on modern composers and opera today?
Dr. Rossi: Puccini has left an indelible mark on the world of opera. His innovative use of melody, orchestration, and his focus on human emotion paved the way for many composers who followed. Modern operas often echo his ability to convey deep emotions and dramatic narratives, showcasing the human condition through music. His influence is still felt as composers strive to create rich, emotionally resonant works.
